Search Query "Wildcards"

Post by Grey » Mon Dec 09, 2013 2:17 pm

Well this is irritating, I can't search for offsets on an offset forum?

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: jazzmaster

It's a phpBB limitation I believe.

search term site:offsetguitars.com into a Google search query works wonders though ;)

So you're saying it would pull too many results for the forum to handle? That makes sense, the wording seemed like they had purposefully blocked it from being searched.

The Google search thing works but I wanted to narrow my results to a specific subforum.

Yes, exactly. PHPBB has a terrible search engine really but it's free so it is what it is. The good quality alternative (vBulletin) is just way too expensive IMO.

You can do that with google.
luau wrote:It works reasonably well and we can even get some of our search's functionality by using some of google's search operators.

It'll probably be old hat for many, but here's a quick tutorial.

Restrict all searches by domain like so: site:offsetguitars.com

We can search in topic titles only with intitle:.. site:offsetguitars.com intitle:NGD will find all threads with NGD in the topic title.

We can search by forum by noting the numbers of the forums in the links to them and using inurl:.. The New & Reissue forum is #6. site:offsetguitars.com intitle:NGD inurl:f=6 will find all threads in New & Reissue with NGD in the title.

Searching by specific poster doesn't seem to be possible.
Original post.

As mezcalhead noted in that thread, this doesn't work in the shop/library section.

The shop is the only one I wanted to search. :fp:

Thanks though.
