Bring back old topics

Post by Rogue » Tue Jan 22, 2008 8:14 am

I have a question about topics that have previously had threads but haven't been active for a while. For example, the Vox AC-30 CC2 does have a thread but it's quite old...is it better for me to make a new thread or just dig up an old thread and post in it? Thanks.

Good question...

Personally, I tend to bump old topics when possible but sometimes if they're just too long or convoluted it makes more sense to just post a fresh topic.  We're not too fussy here about this stuff really so I doubt anyone will get on your case if you feel you need start a new one...  you might get a link back to the old one posted though.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

I agree.  :)

Sometimes the search function is difficult to use, and you can miss the topic you are looking for.

It's good that this has been brought up cuz I know there are people here that would jump down someone's throat with "There's already a thread on that, dude!  It's called a SEARCH button!!!"
:P

It's one thing to gently mention that a thread already exists, and to post a link.  It's not so cool to say things like "It's called a SEARCH button!"  That's just rude!  I don't think there's too much of that here, though.  People are pretty polite, for the most part. ;)

Good point, BB.

I think using a bit of common sense usually helps but because I'm new I wasn't sure of the way things were done around here! I've been on a few forums where people get a bit agitated about the lack of search button usage. I'll bump where possible.

Personally I think it depends on how close the old thread is to the new question, and how old it is.  I know the site itself is pretty new but if it's a 5 year old thread and the original question is only tangentially related, I'd just start a new topic.  That gets greyer for threads that aren't quite as old and are a little more closely related.

Basically I feel like if anyone here is likely to remember the old thread, I'd probably bring it back because at that point I'd feel like I was being redundant otherwise.  If I don't think anybody will remember, I'll start a new one because then it's not redundant.
