Welcome back and congrats on that beautiful BMM JM! I tried tort on my BMM 50th Jag for a bit but prefer mint with that color (The Fender mint guard - not those "too green" ones some vendors offer !}

Enjoy! :)

Thanks!

I am toying with buying a mint one too as it could be nice to change it up now and again - and mint does indeed look great on BMM 👌🏻

It's an absolute stunner, love the subtle checking. I'll never understand why the CS use such ugly tort. Even the squire examples are better.

The checking is extremely subtle. Not sure how they managed to get it like that but it looks great.

The tort is okay but pretty 'meh' for what was a £4500 new guitar. I have £20 ebay guards that look better.
Fortunately it's an easy fix and have made arrangements to grab a Lavaguard out of his next batch.

Also, I have just ordered a Mastery for it. The RSD is great but after a decade of using Masterys it feels weird not having one under my hand.

Considering your long history with Masterys, would you say the claim that the RSD-J and Mastery sound reasonably similar is accurate?

Yeah, the sound is definitely very similar. Definitely familiar amounts of sustain and resonance (especially unplugged). I think it's brighter but, until I put a mastery on and compare, I can't be sure it's not just the guitar in general

Okay, so, I put a Mastery on and gave it a run through.

It definitely got a touch darker with the Mastery compared to the RSD. It was subtle but definitely there. I think Fender certainly were inspired by them when developing their new bridge and it was very close. The feel under the palm was softer on the RSD but it was harder to find the sweet spot doing plam-muting. That almost certainly was down to familiarity though I'm sure - I'm pretty conditioned now with the Mastery bridges. Putting it on felt instantly familiar and, to me, more comfortable.

So the Mastery is staying on. And I put the RSD up on Reverb as a test to see if anyone would pay the money for it and sure enough, after just an hour it was sold. I got £325 for it ($450) which pays for the Mastery plus a little in my pocket which I'll put back into my gear fund.

I've got used to the sound of the pickups already, and their classic spank/warmth and, bar a Lavaguard tort, will just leave it the hell alone I think now and just enjoy it.

+1 on mint, though one of those dark, almost black torts might look nice too.
