Curtis Novak JM-Historic?

Post by jwlee » Tue Oct 19, 2021 5:08 pm

I have found these pickups are historic correct version of their product.

https://www.curtisnovak.com/shop/jm-historic/

has anybody used these pickups?

It seems there are not as much info about these pickups.

Oh, those must be new. Novak doing the Antiquity thing.

I'd really have been into that a few years ago. Now, not as much.

The 58 looks quite similar to Lollar "Black Bobbin" PUs.
I love those BBs on my Partsmaster. Lower output. Less picky. Balanced. :)

Finally someone is making late 60's spec grey bobbins which I love the sound of... except it says they are also Formvar wound and I thought that enamel wire was a big part of the CBS era pickup sound?

I quite like my set of 60-64. Balanced well, very sweet sounding. Not as muddy as the Black Bobbin Lollars. The set has the correct height pole pieces for the era meaning they sit slightly under the covers

I bought a set of Novak Jazzmaster pickups about 2005 or 2006. Don't think he had a Historic line then but I got vintage style, not any humbucker in a JM form. Those Historic I guess are relic types. Mine I think he said were based on his 1963 Jazzmaster. I haven't tried many vintage JMs to know any better but the Novak JM pickups do sound great.

Anybody tried Novak JM-Historic pickups?

Post by wastedyouth » Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:35 am

I haven't seen a whole lot of discussion about these. I am particularly interested in the 1960-1964 Era. Relative to comparisons to the JM-V/JM-Fat combo or Duncan Antiquity I would be appreciated.

me too! I'm very curious about the A2 magnets in a bridge pickup paired with a JMV neck

Just bumping this up if anyone else has feedback on these. There is like NOTHING out there on them. I did see Puisheen Mike Adams say he liked this on his YouTube channel. But no clips or elaboration

I have a set of 1965-1969 Era Historic Novaks on order. They will likely replace my Fralin Hum-Canceling set. I’ll keep you posted.

Novak was making side by side humcancelling Bass VI pickups. I’m not sure if he is still doing so. I would have liked to have tried them on my Bass VI.

He was also making the side by side humcancelling Dano pickups for that 6SB.

I suppose they can still be commissioned.
