For instance, right now on the Gear Page, there is a thread called "Why don't more people talk about Vivian Campbell?", whatever the fuck that means, another one called "Oh, man, did ZZ Top rip off Canned Heat" in 2022 and another one from a guy who bought his first Cure album in 2022 but didn't listen to it he seems to have bought it just because... well, I'll quote it:

"That's why I decided to buy a random album and include it in my collection, I know that it may be an absurd practice but I have found many music lovers who thought that I was ignorant of music for the simple fact of not having anything by The Cure.

Have you ever bought an album from a band you don't like just to have something from that band and they can't complain?"

So we find the Gear Page to be a weird place.

When I tell people what to get as far as Jazzmasters, I always recommend that they start with a real Jazzmaster: with the tremolo unit in the right place, and all Fender parts on there and no Gibson parts, no Tune-O-Matic bridges, no P90s, and so on.

No, that's not what I said. I said that the tremolo should be in the right spot, since that length of string back there adds a lot to the sonic qualities of the Jazzmaster. It doesn't matter all that much what the tremolo is, I have a Mastery and a Descendant on mine. But it does matter where it is.

And also, I said that it should have Fender parts (Mustang bridge) and not Gibson parts (a Tune-O-Matic).

Gonna go ahead and suggest, if you’ve never spent time with one, an affordable but great representation of these guitars can be had for a few hundred dollars in the Squiers that exist. Both the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe examples are really pretty spot on in terms of giving you an idea what they sound/feel/play like and are easy to sell if you find out it isn’t your thing.

The VM ones mostly have rosewood boards, even. I would suggest, very strongly, that you take a look at the Vintage Modified, and you know you take a look and you’ll see that many people are saying “these guitars are a better value than anyone’s ever seen before” and they didn’t think it was possible but they made them and we play them and they *somehow fucks up miming of strumming air guitar* and they’re terrific. So you take a look at those…

i blame the powerpuff girls for my love of breakbeats. no really, first time i remember hearing a break beat was the ppg theme (which sampled the amen break beat) and now one of my favorite artists is someone who uses the break beat in the the same way most guitar players use open strings in guitar riffs.

On a similar note, I think my love of metal can be attributed largely to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

* any mention of Dumble (RIP, i guess) that isn't ironic or satirical in nature
* objectification of "mojo" or "feel"
* cringe AF dad jokes about how your spouse will be upset that you recently completed the acquisition of a single piece of music equipment in an unsneaky manner
* 130 page threads about how you "just don't get" relics
* use of either phrase "could care less" or "couldn't care less"
* describing your p90 gibson toan as "like getting into a bar fight" when in reality you have only seen one in a movie, once
* thinking that Joe Boanermaster or John Mayer are cool or otherwise okay
* 78 page threads about any PRS guitar, guitars, or Paul Reed Smith himself
* bragging about how your band played at a church, barbecue, or combined worship and ribs fest
* 15 page threads about how Herman's Hermits or Winger were actually visionary geniuses (these would be 90 page threads but get locked early)

I'm interested to know what the average OSG score is on this scale. +1 for any you tick off.

- Tone/toan. Unaware of alternate spelling. Not even sure how to usefully describe guitar tone other than "i like/dislike it". +0.

- I don't know who Dumble is/was. +0.

- Mojo... I'm not Austin Powers. +0.

- Spouse jokes... I don't drive and my girlfriend has driven me places just to buy guitars. I'm tempted to call that minus one, but +0.

- I think a lot of people will have to give themselves a point here, but I honestly don't mind relics. I probably wouldn't choose one, but I get their appeal. +0.

- I do say couldn't care less, and I will fight you about why it makes much more sense as a phrase than "could care less". +1.

- I don't have a Gibson or anything with P90s, so N/A. +0

- I think Joe Bonamassa is otherwise OK. He's a much better guitarist than I'm ever likely to be, and he has a vey cool guitar collection. That's living the dream. +1

- I don't like PRS guitars. They just seem too unnecessarily fancy to me. +0

- I'm an atheist, so I'm probably unlikely to ever be invited to play at a church. Playing at a BBQ sounds fun though. Haven't done either, +0.

I read a bunch of threads on here, but they were typically more narrowly tailored: 62 AV vs. 65 AVRI or 62 AV vs. AO, for example. Furthermore, I couldn't easily piece together what the significant differences between AV, AVRI, CS, AO based on these scattering of threads.

AVRI 62 - thinner necks, dark pickups, vintage correct specs
AV 65 - fatter bound necks, brighter pickups, vintage correct specs
AO - even fatter necks, same pickups as AV65, modern radius and tall frets
CS - anything and everything, there's no specific spec (ie: Custom)
