One of these was my first AV level guitar and it was amazing. Wish I still had it

Congrats, they are lovely guitars, my 2013 is all checked and pretty yellow by now (in a good way!) although it barely ever sees the inside of it’s case.

Not sure if anyone answered earlier, but yes the grey cable came as part of the AV65 case candy.

Also, as others have said, you don’t need to be too precious about fixing the neck alignment, if you want to be really careful mark the existing positions of the screw heads with a felt tip, or something you can clean off later, loosen quarter turn and tighten them up again to the original marks when you’re done. But it’s your guitar and your money, I’m sure your luthier will be very happy to take your cash to sort it, and you get peace of mind for your new guitar.

Thanks for your support, everybody!

I have followed the instructions and adjusted the neck a bit. This is a far is it could go without forcing it, but it's an improvement. I should have photographed before, but the first string can now sit almost in the middle of its saddle, rather than far to the outer side.

Nice. Looks evenly spaced to me.

Interesting, thanks! How about the pack of flatwounds? Was it also part of the bundle, I wonder?

While I loved the sound of the stock pickups, I decided to try the Sunday Iolas too, that I had lying around. It's a long story, I got them for my AVII, but they got lost in the mail, so I got the Lollars 63 Jazzmaster® and installed them in AVII, but then Iolas eventually showed up. They have been living in a box for almost half a year. Now that I got the AV65 JM I couldn't let the Iolas go to waste, so with some help I installed them and the Mastery bridge too.

They Iolas sounded great at home, but what really convinced me was trying it in a live setting tonight at my band practice. I am really blown away by the tones in all positions. I think this AV65 is also a more resonant guitar or something. You can hear a drastic difference even when you just play clean behind the bridge.

The AVII sounded fine behind the bridge, but this AV65 is giving me the perfect Sonic Youth-like bells and chimes, very musical, regardless of the type of bridge or pickups (before/after). All of the pickup positions with SHW are extremely useful, punchy, well defined and have a great character to them. I am happy I made the swap.

Everyone at the rehearsal agreed that this Whitey sounds better than the lake placid blue AVII. The latter is very good too, but quite different. The Lollars are much brighter, but I guess that's a good thing as now I have three very distinct JMs, if you count the Japanese Jazzblaster.

Thanks, I am loving it. It's become my main guitar for playing in the band.

All in all, the guitar sounds and plays amazing out of the box, and intonates really well. I did notice that the neck is somewhat misaligned, you can see it in the neck pocket, and the outer strings (1st and 6th) need to sit closer to the side of the bridge posts (?) for the correct alignment on the fretboard, but it looks like it should be an easy adjustment for my luthier. Makes sense?
No need to take it to a luthier.
1. Loosen all strings a few turns (just to be safe)
2. Loosen the neck screws 3/4 turn.
3. Pull neck towards upper horn (don't force it) & even out the spacing.
4. Tighten neck screws & tune up.
5. Play signature chord and/or lick.

If step 3 doesn't work then I would return it immediately and have the store fix it.
Exactly this! I just took my Jaguar bass to my luthier for a set-up and to have the neck reset and he literally did this exact same thing right in front of me in less that five minutes.

If it's okay to ask, how much did he charge you?

Hard to say because it was part of a set-up and install of a NOS Badass II bridge. It was so quick and easy that in retrospect I should have just done it myself.

I always loved the oly white AV65. Matching headstock and binding look great. Would love to try one out some day. Enjoy!
