OK, the time has come to tell the backstory on this.

I met Brian Swerdfeger at Summer NAMM 2019. He was a VP at Fender at the time, but has since moved on and is currently in very poor health. He arranged for the guitar to be shipped to me and I retained the mailing label from the original box. It’s my intention to list this for sale in the classifieds and sell it to an OSG member for whatever they deem it to be worth. I plan to write and sign a brief letter detailing the backstory, address it directly to the buyer, and include it with the guitar. I’m currently waiting for edited photos to share, and I will post them here and in the classified ad.

If there’s any interest at all, I’d like it to stay here in the OSG family.

You’re assuming the price will be bid up. I’m assuming the price will be bid down. The guitar market is pretty soft right now and, by all accounts, this is a commodity item.

We'll probably have to wait till NAMM sometime in 2017 to see where this is going. Obviously they did not get rid of it since many more pictures have been taken of this guitar. it's at the Fender Hollywood offices so I would not be surprised if it were a prototype for some release of the guitar.

No new news, but then not many get to pass through those doors to the Hollywood offices I reckon. The guy who originally posted it was Otisserie on Instagram whom seems to know quite a few people in the industry, or at least being contact with them.

My guess is it's a prototype for a Mexican re-release, probably on In Utero's 25th anniversary or something like that. Guess we'll have to wait for NAMM and see if it turns up.

In that case I’m sceptical that it is the first of the current run. Mine has a much lower serial number: MX21525254

(That said, I don’t know everything about how Fender do their serial numbers so maybe it is non-consecutive?)

Fender serial numbers are non-sequential, and both are from 8/2021. Also, I’m fully prepared for the idea that the “back story” adds no value whatsoever.

Thanks for reaching out. I do see that there were quite a number of these built prior to your build date (08/16/2021), so while it was likely in the first batch of production, it was not the first one. I do see that this guitar was sent out from the factory as a sample. So it was likely sent to a sales rep to show around to dealers and ultimately sold in.

Well, that settles it. I’ll include some material with this guitar to validate its provenance, but I don’t feel comfortable saying there’s anything particularly special about it to anybody other than me.
