Re: what do most of you think is best
I'd go with a Bass VI...I am a bit of a purist at times I guess....
I like the fact the Bass VI has the JM/Jag trem on it and stuff.
building one from USCG parts is relatively easy

Bass VI
The Jag bari has a shorter scale which supposedly causes a floppy low E.
Plus, the Bass VI can be used as a Bass with the right amp/EQ...

Re: what do most of you think is best
I have all 3 - Jag Bass, Jag Baritone, and Bass VI (CS and reissue). They are all different, but I'll try to sum it up briefly:
Jag Bass - this is a regualr bass, plain and simple (well not really with all the chrome!). You'd use it like any other 4 stringer. Buy this if you want to play bass.
Jag Baritone - I have mine strung B-B and love it that way. I like the sustain with the stop tailpiece, but I do miss the whammy. Buy this if you want a lower tuned guitar. You can do bass lines, but it is not a bass. I think it sounds OK tuned E-E, but since I keep mine B-B there must be a reason (oh yeah! I have a Bass VI).
Bass VI - the real thing if you're looking for a crossover instrument. You can play bass lines, chords, and if you use different voicings you can do really interesting stuff. Harmonics with the whammy are really cool. It has been used on some cool stuff - Back in the Saddle by Aerosmith, a bunch of stuff by the Cure, etc. Good for high notes too that you could play on a regular guitar, but they sound different higher up the neck with the longer scale.
