Is a 1999 Jag worth $2,300 to $2,600
I am in the process of negociating the sale of a 1999 AVRI Jag that is candy apple red and has a mint green pickguard. I am being told that the guitat was a custom shop built guitar and color and it has no custom shop marking on the guitar. It was taken to the namm show and then purchased by the owner i am dealing with. And to my knowledge there is no difference in the electronics or hardware from a normal AVRI. So i was wondering if i should steer clear of this or pursue this. Wasnt cany apple red a standard color option in '99?

OK, remember I am not in the USA, but I have been watching ebay for a while ...
AFAIK candy apple red was available for a very short period around 1999
the book price fender uses for AV jaguars is about US$1900 give or take a bit
if it was a custom shop build is SHOULD have something to indicate that.... stamp on the body, CS neckpate , decal or stamp on the back of the headstock, CS case, COA, CS serial no.
I would step back very slowly and do not make eye contact....
In my experience the fit and finish / quality of the AV jaguar is truly superb and almost equal to the custom shop anyway. if there is not difference in the hardware/electronics you are spending effectively and extra grand over the street price of a new AV jag (US$1300 - US$1400) and US$1.5k over a second hand AV jaguar from ebay.

I agree with sookwinder, walk away. It's not a custom shop just cause someone wants it to be, and just because it was at the NAMM show means nothing special. If there is no definitive history (paper work from fender with serial numbers/CS logo on the back of the neck), then it's just a story, and no story is worth an extra 1k.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Most of the NAMM guitars I've seen have a "NAMM" stamp in either the neck pocket or somewhere under the guard. There would need to be documentation for that fish tale to get any credit with me. If I had $10 for every dealer I've heard pitching a NAMM guitar, I'd have...
...well, at least a couple hundred dollars. ::)
Seriously, there is a very limited number of NAMM guitars every year in any company's display. While Fender tends to have rows of one particular model in every conceivable color at each show (CS runs), those are typically already spoken for by the end of the day on Wednesday. I didn't go to NAMM in 1999 or 2000, so can't say what model they chose to spotlight, but it is possible that they had a CAR Jag as a one-off somewhere on the second floor. They put a lot of guitars out at those shows, but every one I've seen is marked in some way (even on the tags).
Personally, I wouldn't pay near that for that guitar without a bona-fide Custom Shop pedigree. Just because a guitar has graced the Convention Center halls doesn't add a dime to the value in my opinion. Most dealers/sellers will tell you otherwise - especially if they haven't been able to sell it for the last 6-7 years!

A distributor of Fender in Japan did order some custom Jaguars and Jazzmasters a few years back in Custom Colors. I believe there was 50 of each made.
They had Matching Headstocks and I think the Pickups were wound closer to original specs. They crop up sometimes on eBay and people Identify them as CIJ's or Refins, but they're actually US made. they have no Custom Shop markings or any marking of any kind signifying they're special edition status but they do have USA cases and all the usual USA case candy.
It could be what the guy is trying to sell you, but I would take a close look at it.

Times change. Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky? Now it grows hair! We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger
