CIJ Jazzmaster pickups

Post by JazzBrew » Sun Apr 22, 2007 9:07 am

A guy on another forum claims that the pickups on CIJ Jazzmasters are wound like Strat pickups, so therefore they sound like Strats, not Jazzmasters.  Anyone else heard this? I've never played an American Jazzmaster, so I don't really know what they sound like.

True.

Not really. Pickups are only one factor in how the guitar sounds. The overall construction of jazzmasters, especially the bridge/vibrato, IMHO has a far more pronounced effect on the sound. A CIJ jazzmaster will still sound like a jazzmaster, though due to the different pick-ups not necessarily as full and rich as a vintage one or, I assume, the AVRI counterparts.

i actually like the CIJ pickups. after replacing mine with Seymour Duncan SJM-1s and SJM-3s, i have on a few occations put a CIJ neck pickup back in one of my JMs. they are much thinner sounding, and that can be quite useful in some situations. i always wound up putting the Duncans back though, and i've never liked the CIJs in the bridge position.

that interesting jonas

I like the range of tones that the CIJ pups have
from really shrill brights on the lead to deep jazzy tones on the rythym

i like the bright ringing tones on the cij's pickups
and its the only guitar i have that has that bright fender single coil sound

Like eveyone I am planning to switch them out,
but, will I loose the flexibility of the the CIJ?
or will it still produce really bright tones like the bridge lead setting

thanks

Well I've replaced my CIJ pickups with SD quaterpounders. You will still get your bright bridge setting, all be it a tiny bit smoother. And off course it works better with lots of gain, it stays clearer and doesn't become muddy when overdriven. Still though a lot of people don't like the quaterpounders, but I think they are great sounding pickups and flexible too. I play in a kinda melodic hardrock/heavy metal style band and I use my jazzmaster for both our heavy sounds and our ballads. It has kept its versatility I think.
