Any other Orig 66 JMs with fully painted neck pockets?

Post by scottme » Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:30 am

Hi guys,

I was thinking about my JM, an I got wondering if there were any other original factory finish sunburst 66s with fully painted neck pockets? The finsh looks otherwise about correct, although the red band has faded somewhat. The chipped area around the screw holes suggest that there is the standard Fullerplast and yellow stain underneath

This guitar has a Feb 66 neck date, very early for a block inlay neck. Possibly a prototype guitar?

are you sure the edge hasnt been re-blacked and then the whole guitar clearcoated?

Certainly possible, but there's nothing else to suggest it. The level of checking is consistant over the body and neck. The decal has been clearcoated over, but that happened in the factory for a short time in 65-66.

yeh thats what i mean cos the level of checking is consistant over the whole guitar...If you re-black the edge on a sunburst you would then spray the whole body in clearcoat..then you get the same checking all over. I have a real early neck here..no clearcoat on the top of the transfer..

For anyone how wants to know...

I just spotted this Olivias auction for an early Jag:

Seems there were instances where the pocket was completely painted black in original factory finishes. Maybe it was a result of a botched or experimental burst attempt, or at the begining of a new or modified production line?

I'd sure love Jim Shine to still be around.
