Value of a '66 Fender XII with stripped body

Post by DB » Mon May 07, 2007 7:51 pm

Hey folks, I have a line on an XII, appears to be a 1966 with untouched neck but has had the finish removed from the body.  The neck appears orignal and is in great shape, but the body was stripped and never refinished. -  is just raw wood with what appears to be a bit of sunburst traces left.  I got my current original 1966 original SB finish XII for just over $2,200 USD, but I'm not sure what a refin is worth.  All other parts appear original compared to my current XII, and are in good condition (some wear and aging, but not beat up).

What do you think a reasonable offer for this one is?

Thanks,

DB

That all depends on how much the shop/person thinks its worth and how much they may be willing to negoatiate.  Is the any asking price for it at all?

I bought my original burst for $2100 sans case.  I typically feel like a refin is worth about 60-70% of an original.  If it has the correct case that's a huge plus as well.  Without seeing more details I'd put it in the $1400-$1800 range for just a stripped body.  The amount of actual wear and weather it includes the correct case being the difference in low to high.  Considering it'll cost in the neighborhood of $4-500 to have it finished that might be worthy of some consideration as well.  And FWIW I just love my XII... even though it is a finicky beast.

Thanks for the input.  Non original case, so that doesn't help. So I'm thinking maybe $1500-$1600 would be my top offer.  I concur with the $400-$500 for a nitro refin -- same quotes I've seen from reputable sources.

Maybe I'm lucky, but my current XII is the best and most stable 12 string electric I've ever owned.  It is not finicky at all, and tuning is a dream (E to D to G  -- whatever -- it plays and stays in tune!).  Not at all like the Ric Tom Petty I once owned or my brother's 360-12, that were so annoying to attempt to keep in tune -- good looks and great tone, as long as you didn't have to play in tune!

Mines got some weird buzzing thing that's problematic on a couple amps but not others, two tuning keys that are a wreck (those F keys are awful) and slip like crazy, and the nut was cut a bit iffy so a couple strings are very close together while others have plenty of space.  I do think it's the original too...  ???  Other then that it sound wonderful and plays very well.  Good luck though...  could be a good deal and a fun project for sure.

I bought daydreamdelays' '66 XII for $1500, and it is stripped...I thought it was a fair price :)

Yeah, a couple of my F keys kind of slip when restringing and bring it up to pitch, but once there they hold just fine.  First time I restrung it I was a bit concerned, but all is OK (for now at least).

I'd love to find some spare tuners for the day one of these goes.
