Depends on who you ask. Really IMO its about where you are. If you are in the US you can get a minty avri for under 1,000.

Theres already like a million threads about avri vs mij/cij just search and ye shall find.

regarding the BUZZSTOP ....

many many forumites  here do not like the BUZZSTOP, some do.
There are numerous threads here discussing the pros and cons of a buzzstop  .... check em out they will educate you on this thing....

from my point of view it goes like this:

1.  A correct set up (for a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar) should negate the need for a buzz stop
2.  What ever "advantages" the Buzzstop gives work better on a Jaguar rather than a Jazzmaster given the lower tension of the strings on a Jaguar (ie the buzzstop tensions up the strings)
3. The buzzstop when fitted to a Jazzmaster (and probably to a Jaguar) changes ever so slighty the perceived sound... better ??  worse ?? who knows...
4. The buzz stop when fitted to a Jazzmaster stop the strings "vibrating" behind the bridge and obviously the ability of the player to pluck the strings there as well
5. For some guitars (especially a Jaguar with its lower tension strings) which have a tendency to have the strings jump off the saddles, the Buzzstop allows for a greater tension of the strings over the saddles  reducing the chance that they will suddenly jump off  (note see point (1))
6. The buzz stop does in a lot of cases stop the buzzing  (note  see point 1)
7.  The buzzstop is relatively cheap and can be fitted and removed without any damage to the guitar in question
8.  The buzz stop will "work" better with lower guage strings...  if the JM or Jag is fitted with 11s or 12s the tendency of the strings to jump off the saddles is less due to their higher tension than say 9s

I have 3 jaguars, one of them is fitted with a buzzstop ... why ?  just because I can ...  I have 10s and 11s fitted
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

I completely agree with everything right above.

Buzzstop - easy on - easy off.  It does change the sustain on the JM a bit, but it really solves the bridge problems.  It kind of looks cool, too.

I took the Buzzstop off a few months ago, did a really comprehensive set up on my CIJ JM and went to heavier guage strings (.11's) and the buzz at the bridge is completely gone and, to my ears, it sounds like a JM again -

JM's are peculiar animals - They were designed for heavier (jazz) strings and I think that we all forget that.  Going heavy and setting it up right solves what a lot of people think of as design flaws.

The Buzzstop is a cool thing if you like the way yr guit sounds after the easy mod.  It's not necessary at all.  Get one and try it out - like I wrote - easy on, easy off.  Maybe I'll use it again someday - Cool thing, but not necessary at all.
