Sonic blue Jag or JM, with mint pickguard... What do they look like?

Post by Gordon » Sat Jul 14, 2007 12:19 am

I'm starting to assemble a Jaguar, that I'm getting in sonic blue, and I want to put a mint PG on it. Except that, when I google the color for references, I find like 40 different shades of light blue... :-\ This is what I have from the Dressing Room:

And this what I photoshopped from a seafoam green I found on the net (if it's your guitar, I love it!) to the color I remember as sonic blue, from a guitar I played in a shop:

I know the pastel colours are difficult to picture, especially the greens and the blues, but... What do you think of those? Are they sonic blue to you? I'm looking for other pictures (new guitars, nothing greenish due to the yellowed clear coat) for reference, thanks if you have that somewhere. :)

vintage sonic blue is a very pale blue with a hint of grey to it like you see in lalaland's photo's . it was a post war auto mobile color after all. the reissue color that you see on newer strats and the CIJ JM and Jags is much more of a pastel blue like in your photoshopped version...it has more blue and has a white rather than grey tint...the first time i saw a reissue sonic blue i thought it was daphne blue.

usually the yellowing on sonic blue doesn't turn it green, at least not like surf green, but a pale yellow-grey color...looks like something from a military hospital. daphne blue will go a deeper green though, but not quite seafoam.

i like the poly sonic blue shade on the reissues, but it's different from the vintage color. the same goes for surf green and seafoam green. the old surf green was much greyer. as far as tint goes...surf green and sonic blue have about equal chroma and seafoam and daphne are about equal for a deeper shade.

That explains a lot, thanks! :)

Too bad my poly-coated guitar (I don't paint it myself, and can't chose between poly and nitro) won't age as nicely... :?

Warmoth is taking care of the finish, but I thought only recently to check their showcase for sonic blue guitars...

I had to let go of my refinished sonic blue 63 Jag. It was sooooo gorgeous. Really shocking, actually. That was the one people would say WOW! at.

I will definitely get another Sonic Blue Fender. It might be Jag Baritone I have refinished or it might be a strat!

I feel like I should spend some serious time with a good strat.

I've just received my Warmoth body... It's a PITA to get a good photo of it. :P

Upper left-hand corner, it's the closest I could get. ;D

Beautiful .. I would've said the upper right hand corner looks more like daphne to me, but the others are what I think of as sonic.

I find Sonic Blue changes dramatically depending on the light it's in and can go anywhere from very pale and grey to looking exactly like daphne blue as Gordon's photos indicate.

One of my favourite Jazzmaster finishes, but I'm my CIJ is going sadly. I'll get another in the future though...

When I first looked at the daphne pic on my computer, I had to double-check it was the same body, and not a pic I'd have found on the net. ;D

Indeed... I now understand why I couldn't find a lot of pictures that had the same shade of blue I've seen on that sonic blue Strat I loved. :)
