Hound: It's funny you mention Thom Yorke, I always think Robert Smith when I think of Black w/Tortoise. Hence why I was interested in it. Wheras Sunburst is more "Americana" to me for some reason, and I like that vibe too.. matches all my flannel.

and SpaceCadet: good tip! I will give that a try. Might make this all a lot easier for me.

I really really love the 3-tone sunburst finish and I really really love the Black finish. Either way is a win for me since I'll get a beautiful Jazzmaster no matter what. Yet I'm still fretting about it  :-\

  Here's the pic of the sunburst I just got from Japan.  There's a part of the wood that has a "discoloration" (?) in certain lights.  In fact, there are few ways you can hold it so that you CAN'T see it.  Is there a technical term for this?  I've been calling it "the knap".



  Let me get a general concensus on this, because people tell me I'm too picky (i.e. orange binding on a B&B neck).  Would this discoloration bother anyone?  Not enough to send it back to Japan, but if you saw it in a store, would you pass it up?

mine is a 2007 cij sunburst and there is nothing like that on it
and i would have sent back FWIW, ishibashi are very obliging,

I don't like the pickguard ,and i bought an allparts tortoise guard but it was slightly different. (didn't feel for drilling new hole's and move the dimond shaped control plate)
It will fit a MIJ jag but mine is CIJ

and with the allparts guard, you can see that it's slightly different

and actually it's been a slow day at work, so i've had lots of time to think about it. i will get a black one after all.

that is one drool-worthy jag i love the darker toroise guards so much, i hope my guard looks like that when i get it

Dude ,i had the same problem getting the same PG on my CIJ.You need to make the minor adjustments or it wont fit.

Also AFAIK CIJ and MIJ are the same except for a decal saying so.I'm sure they wouldn't change there expensive cnc machines for a 1/2 cent decal.

The Control plate requires new screw holes,fill the old ones with matches and glue then line it up and pre drill it,easy!

If the PG's tight just file it a little,it wont hurt it.
And peel that protective plastic wrapping layer off it after you done the work but before you put it back together.

gah, you were right. i dunno why i mixed that up but i just checked fender japan and it say: 3TS, VWH, USB　にはベッコウ柄3P、その他の色にはエイジドホワイト3P
のピックガードを標準装備しています。

translation: "3 tone sunburst, vintage white [olympic white], and US blonde all come with a tortoise pickguard. all others colors [old candy apple red, old lake placid blue, black] come with a vintage white [mint green] pickguard."


looks like i'll have to hunt down a tort guard while i'm waiting for my next paycheck.
