total sense stevO!

i would have no problem buying a signature instrumrnt
that had features i wanted but still looked pretty normal
(like a kotzen or keef richards tele)

Yeah, exactly. My beef is that the people who usually buy these Mark Hoppus/Tom Delonge/Blink 182 guitars/basses usually are playing the same type of music and are so totally unoriginal and un-unique where as someone playing a Geddy Lee Jazz bass or a Eric Johnson Strat are playing those instruments because they're great all around and aren't off the wall crazy looking.

Sort of reminds me of what Wayne Coyne said:
"It is easier to not do crazy things and get normal sounds. I'd rather do normal things and get crazy sounds."
