Welcome to the forum.

Err ... I'm no expert, as will soon be apparent ... but surely a Jazzmaster with a Jagmaster body is a Jagmaster??

Presumably some confection of the Fender marketing department for a guitar with an offset body that isn't a Jag or a JM.
we are indeed wandering bewildered into the realm of trigger's broom.

I saw a pic somewhere of the red Squier Tailstop Jazzmaster with the anodized pickguard. These are pretty friggin sweet.

Are there two versions of the black Mustang?

In some pictures the pickguard design looks much better and has more screws in the top and it also lines up better around where it meets the bridge.
Also, the truss-rod hole on the headstock appears to be rosewood, not the standard black plastic you see on most squiers.
It has different humbuckers with 3 screws. And it's probably not swimmingpool routed judging by the screw in the middle of the pickguard.
Does anyone else care about this?

There is just one version. The photo you posted is the original photo that Fender/Squier provided which was a mock-up.
The Bullet Mustang is 24" scale. It has a swimming pool route. Below is a scan of the actual pickguard and a photo of the actual body.

I guess I was just hoping there was a slightly better quality option out there.
I thought there might be a Chinese option like with the candy apple red Jazzmaster releases.

That's just Fender's excellent photoshop skills.

I've got one of the black Squier Mustangs and the pickguard has 3 screws along the top curve, not five. There's no screw in the middle of the pickguard either, and it is a swimming pool rout under there. The humbuckers on mine have just two screws, and the truss-rod hole is standard Squier black plastic, definitely nowhere near rosewood. The pickguard does line up around the bridge a little bit neater on the photoshop image than on the actual guitars but really just on the treble side. The switch tip is black on mine, not white like the picture.

I thought I'd care more about all this, and I have a higher than average level of OCD, but it's a £90 Squier…

EDIT: just noticed Pat's photo shows all of this
How do you feel about the neck? I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of the 12" radius or even the satin finish but that's just me. I'm used to old guitars with 7.5 radius, mostly Fenders, so this one is taking a little longer for me to adjust to. It feels wide and flat and skinny all at the same time. But once I polish the frets, walnut the fretboard and change the strings up a gauge I'll probably be fine with it.

Any stores near you got them in stock?
I haven't seen one in person yet. I'm not huge on 12" radii either, but I'm excited to try this out.

i'm watching this right now and im sorry but chappers ALWAYS makes guitars sound like arsecakes. every time he plays clean it's like his eq is dead as fuck and every time he plays overdriven or distorted, it makes me just think "failed bar band guitar player"

i genuinely want to try all of these guitars. because i love baritones, i love jazzmasters and i love my full scale jagmaster conversion guitars. but this demo is doing nothing for me. my friend is wanting one of the mustangs and i told him not to look up the demos and instead we both go in.

in defence of chappers, he sounds like he's doing it for the money not the love, which is about right with jobs. most of us have total whore & disinterested days. just not on cam.
on the other hand (heart hardening) the whole format is basically top gear (or top bantz) for instruments. which grates with me, though lots of musicians watch top gear so marketed to them. i am not a target market.

re taking, going in as a pair always fun because you can swap & compare ideas on how to get best out of it. shared learning.
i'm spent out on housing bills until easter so need to flip gear for money, which isn't instant. but black jm looks irresistible. i sold my jagmaster because i hate all trems, so hardtail & thru body strings is my ideal. & hums not p90s mean i can drop something else in without work.

will be interesting to see wht you do with yours. i think the mustangs at £115 are asking to become modding go-tos for years to come. will be a neat little scene around them.
