You aren't doing anything wrong. I bought one for an Italia guitar and had the same issue. The solution is to dremel out / widen one side (or both) from the back. I found comments from other people who had the same issue.
Good to know, I may buy a dremel, but I found another bridge, not as sleek looking, but it retains the original bridge look with rollers. I ordered it, but if I wanna switch it out, I shall try what you suggested. I've been really getting into DIYing stuff. I wanna be the kind of guy who can build or fix things for a fraction of the price. I appreciate the response too! :D

Here is mine, really only change is bridge, toggle switch tip and knobs. The knobs are so cool looking, I found them at an electronics store. They are solid shaft screw on knobs, but I made a little adapter out of brass sheet metal. I found some professionally made adapters online, so I ordered some. Also, I got a working roller bridge on it, finally.

I made a few changes to mine...

Including Sherwood green paint, 65 JM decal, SD Antiquity I's, AVRI trem, Fender neck plate & strap locks... Whatever, I got caught up in the moment.

How did you paint it? And how do you like the SD A1's?

Awesome paint color! Yeah, how do you like the pickups? I love the stocks, but if I were to change them, I'm gravitating towards SD Antiquity series. At the moment, Antiquity II's seems to tickle my fancy more, so it'd be nice to hear an opinion on the I's.

Welp, I just put the A1's in yesterday, so give me a couple days to give you an opinion. My initial impression was that the output was lower than the originals, but the sound was crisp and vintage sounding.... If that makes sense. I bought them because I saw that J Mascis has them in his actual Squier and Nels Cline has them in some of his old JM's.

As far as paint, I put an ad on Craigslist and had someone do it for me. I was going to try it, but I wasn't confident in myself to get it right. The guy that did it was really cool and a bit of a perfectionist. He got the paint from Re-Ranch. It looks incredible to me.

Sick, I didn't know Mascis had Antiquity I's in his guitar. That's awesome, but I'll be honest, I'm not much of a Dinosaur Jr. fan. That color with the Gold pickguard is absolutely beautiful and very unique.

Celebrity endorsements work for me... Especially when it comes to gear. It also keeps me away from certain brands. #labelwhore

How did you go about changing out that tune-o-matic bridge for a mustang? I did a mod on my cp jag but i had to keep the tune-o matic thimbles and just modify the bridge to sit on them.

I used this method to change the bridge (it's a JM bridge):

A question for those who swapped the trem for a AVRI, do you think it improved the guitar a lot?

Nope, but I found one on eBay for $40 and was willing to let go of that!

I have a Squier Mascis, but so far all I've done is put on a black pickguard. I like the way it looks, but I might swap it out again for a black anodized guard. I like the 1 ply feel of it.

I am looking at a mastery bridge. Has anyone put one on yet? Do the thimbles have to be changed? Will I need to do any filling and re-drilling?

Did the AVRI fit the hole pattern? Or did you need to make more holes?
