Months? Are you using the nickel sets or the "Rock Formula" sets? That's absolutely incredible for pure nickel and still pretty damn impressive for anything else! I must know!lalalandstudios wrote:

I use original nickels not the rock formula , but don't sweat alot and I am not playing gigs. Again, YMMV but I think they're really great strings

with the £/$ exchange rate, it might actualy be kinda affordable to get a few sets![]()
I've tried other high end strings (Elixirs, Pyramids, LaBella), but these are tops in terms of sound and playability. They work very well with JMs and Jags. You should definitely check them out.
thanks Frank, I'll look into them....can I buy them online somewhere?

Re: What's your preferred string gauge?
Slapped a set of Snake Oil 11-48 nickels on my AVRI today. So far I like them, I had been using Fender 10-46 nickels, so I'm still kind of sifting through what's the difference in gauge and what's the difference in the strings.
They tuned up pretty quick, not a whole lot of stretching necessary. They sound very good and relatively well balanced. Only relatively since there's a noticeable difference in output between the wound and plain strings, but it's at the very least no worse than other pure nickel strings, and probably a bit better. E, A, & D are well balanced with each other, as are G, B & e. If these last half as long as they're supposed to I'll be happy.

Re: What's your preferred string gauge?
Maybe I'm a freak... but i use a DR custom set Tight-Wound 10-60 (.010, .014, .018, .032w, .046w, .060w). I use those on all my guitars; 3 LPs, 2 Jags, Strat, and Tele. I''m sure that using the same set of strings for 3 different scale lengths makes me weird, but oh well.

I'm with you DeadPenny. I use Ernie Ball 2221 (10-46) on everything (JMs, Strats, LPs, Mustang, SG).
Bigger in sum than parts.

Re: What's your preferred string gauge?
on most of my 25,5" scale guitars I use standard Ernie Ball regular slinky ( 010 013 017 026 036 046). I've recently put a set of D'adarrio chromes ( flatwounds) 012 on my Les Paul and I'm loving it. On my beaten up Epiphone Genesis I've put a set of Ernie Ball 009, which makes that guitar extremely light to play ( I play most of my "metal" stuff on that guitar)

Nah, not at all! If anything it ought to bring out the differences in the different scale lengths that makes each of them unique and fun.DeadPenny wrote: I''m sure that using the same set of strings for 3 different scale lengths makes me weird, but oh well.

Re: What's your preferred string gauge?
I just took the plunge and ordered 5 sets of D'Addario 11-52s....moving on to the heavier side from my usual 10-52
let's see how this goes....

The only shop in town that stocks D'addario Chromes is closing down, so I'll have to go back to using rounds again.
I use the same d'addario 11's on all my guitars, it gives each guitar a different feel.

I use Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's but if I ever get the chance to buy some Fender Super 250's I get them straight away, but no where near me stocks them! Grr..

Re: What's your preferred string gauge?
I think it's great that there is such a variety of types of strings used by people here.
I used to use d'addario 11s on my guitars (sometimes flatwounds on my jazzmaster), but i realized i much prefer the sound of 10s on my epiphone casino and since I did want a similar feel on my different electrics I changed my jazzmaster to 10s, too.
I'm under the impression that on the jazzmaster the gauge doesn't have that much of an influence on the sound (compared to my casino)
