I agree about the inventory dropping because I've been looking for Jaguars and now Jazzmasters recently and really struggled to find places with them in stock. I ended up getting a Player Jaguar that was slightly below the typical prices listed elsewhere (even if they had no stock), knowing it would need a few jobs doing to get it 100% to my liking in terms of sharp frets/rough fingerboard. Given that there were so few around I took my chances and I've spent a bit of time sorting it out and it plays well now. In different times I'd have just moved on and tried the next one off the rack.

Now I'm looking at a Jazzmaster (after initially looking for another Strat but with a Rosewood fingerboard/9.5" radius as a compliment to my '57 spec maple neck one). There were very few Strats available to my spec, then having joined this forum after I bought my Jaguar, I got turned to the idea of a Jazzmaster instead...same story: Hardly any around, apart from a couple of really rough Player models (which probably hadn't sold because they were poor examples, with very rough frets and fingerboards). I've managed to track down an AO60s Jazzmaster to be sent to my local branch, but I'm half expecting it to be another poor example, but just because it's available still. It has a mark on the back of the body, so I'm hoping that's the reason it hasn't sold yet (and it meant a bit more money off the regular price, so a bonus to me as it'll get marks on it soon enough anyway).

I'm sure once I start listing some of my un-used/un-wanted gear prices will dive though. ::)

Everyone seems to be playing guitar and riding bicycles more, and its reflected in inventory and prices. . .oh, they are also buying guns and ammo (at least in the U.S.).

Maaan, I feel that. A guitar store in Adelaide had an AVRI 62JM hanging up for what must have been about 5 years. I looked at it two or three times, and the last time it was looking dusty, the board needed an oil and the strings were shot, but it still sounded soooo good. If i'd known that people would be asking double it's price for used ones now I'd have jumped on it like that.
I picked up my AVRI 62JM a few years back at my local shop. The owner & I started talking about Jazzmasters & he said he got one in trade that had been sitting in a music store for a few years, it was essentially "new old stock", & I took it off his hands. It had all the case candy, original case, everything...They announced the next week that they stopped production on that line. I felt like I got pretty lucky & I still have it today. I realize we are discussing the guitar market of late but still...
We are merely moving shadows.

i can only speak for the uk but it went from a pretty big used market to dead and it's starting to pick back up again.

i think what's happened is more people got stuck in the house and wanted to spend time playing guitar. this lead to lot's of people then watching youtube clips and thinking "man, i always wanted X guitar and i just got Y amount of money, i've also got more time....... add to cart" im kinda guilty of this myself. when the guitar stores opened back up, i seen the uk FINALLY got the squier mustang bass and the super-sonic so i just kinda said to myself.... "fuck it. finally gonna get these because i spent the last 3 months in the flat and i'm kinda tired of playing the guitars i have"

what i've noticed is people are selling big bits of gear. i've seen a fair amount of 4x12's on the market (even grabbed a cheap one) because no one knows when we're gonna be gigging again so you kinda gotta ask yourself "is it worth having this monolith laying around when i can't use it?"

My music retail friends tell me that people are buying gear right now like it's going out of style. I bought stuff this year but sold stuff too, like any other year. Two guitars out, one guitar and one amp in.

A few reasons for this I’ve noticed:

Demand is high

Every online buying option now charges tax. Usually you sell something to get something else. To make up for the tax on what you are going to buy next many add a bit more to the price.

Reverb fees just went up. Fees in general are high everywhere so people factor that into price.

Shipping prices are crazy high.

All this equals more expensive guitars in general. If you want good deals you’ve got to find that guy that needs to get rid of is stuff quick.

I too would like to go back in time and make good investments. At the beginning of the 2015-16 season I would have liked to put a bet/wager that Leicester City would win the Premier League with its 5000:1 odds. That could get you a few guitars too.
No, the best time to place that bet would have been at the end of the first "round" in January... They were in last place i believe. :wtf:

That Trogly guy on YouTube hyped the hell out of those guitars and did several episodes on them. He probably bought up as many as he could, hyped them/listed them and watched his profits role in...what a weasel. Anyone that would buy one for $1200 is insane.

Only my own situation (UK) but:
No gigs and any in the future have been getting periodically postponed. So definately tempted to sell off amps. Bought amp sim plugins. Maybe its the lack of stimulation but i care less about it being 'the real thing'.

But the problem is "collection only" yet that doesnt seem to affect a lot. Unless they cram it in between lockdowns.

Back on psychology if there is nothing happening to inspire new music, sometimes gear can refresh it. Only last night i was listening to something about a reduction in our cognitive and memory skills due to being stuck at home (am pretty sure humans mind are mostly reactive to stimuli, not computing away on their own)...heck ive been tempted to at least put something new into the system, a new guitar? Ive already done this with pedal, so...
Usually i might go to gigs or play gigs, maybe a micced recording session, moves things forward in terms of making art, whether that art is just 'learnig guitar' for some it needs some impetus from somewhere.

I think it's just a feeding Frenzy everywhere... the world has a bad bad case of GAS this year.

I haven't sold or bought any guitars but I've been selling off pedals as I fine tune my rig.

The last month I think I sold 3 pedals. Every one sold for my full asking price in less than an hour.

I'm not selling anything exotic. I sold a Phase 95, a Fender Tre-Verb, and a JHS Morning Glory V4.

Yeah good luck getting that for a Jaguar. Most vintage Jags I see are around the $5K range. You ain't gonna get Strat or Tele money for one of those.

I know that seller personally with the Oly White '62 Slab Board. Bought quite a few vintage pieces off of him. Good guy, willing to work with you.

That's a spectacular piece, and that price is pretty fair imo given what it is.
