Pickup recommendations

Post by Chriswatts217 » Sun Oct 11, 2020 1:45 pm

I am looking for some help in deciding what jazzmaster pickups to get. I have narrowed it to three companies. Novak, McNelly, and Lambertones. I have a 60th anniversary JM and want something clearer especially the neck pickup.

.

If the neck pickup you have is too muddy ... try a series 0.047uF tone cap on the pickup hot lead. You can also measure you volume pot kohms and find one that measures on the high end of the spec (say move from one that measures near 450k to finding top end one that measures near 550k) or the next higher spec pot (500k to 1Meg).

Lower pickup heights helps too.

PV65s should not be muddy. Both luthiers I've had work with them say they sound fantastic and both of them are very experienced people. Might be cheaper to look at simpler explanations of the lack of definition.

I see you just joined two days ago. Welcome.

Now, I don't mean to patronize you, but how new are you to Jazzmasters? I ask because there's a small chance you're mistaking the rhythm circuit (switch in the upper horn) for the neck pickup (which is also active in the lead circuit).

The rhythm circuit is a dark tone because of the low value tone pot in there, which incidentally can also be swapped for a 1M roller pot very easily (something I've done to several jaguars).

The neck pickup is also accessible in the lead circuit and sounds brighter there. I don't know if I've ever met someone who found a PV65 pickup "too muddy" before.

Also, is the 60th anniversary model one of the one where Fender put 500k pots into the lead circuit? Because a switch to the traditional 1M would also brighten it up.

I've seen many requests for pickup recommendations that are warmer than a PV65, never one for something brighter before.

Edit for typo.

Not to be devil's advocate here, but a lot of people want a warmer bridge pickup. If you dialed your amp in so that the bridge pickup is warmer, the neck pickup would probably be muddy. This is why I'm not a big fan of stock JM pickups to be honest, at least those that have similar windings for both pickups like the PV65s. It's very hard to dial in the amp in such a way that both the bridge and neck sound good. Just my 2 cents.

I did check to make sure I am not in the rhythm circuit. I will look at the mentioned tips. Thanks for all the input.

I have no trouble dialing in great tone on my AV65 JM.. Mostly Stock except for the Mustang Bridge... The AV65 Pickups sound great..

If I had a JM that I wanted to mod Pickups I would look at Fralin, Duncan & Lollar.
