Question for AR XII string owners - worried

Post by unreal77 » Fri Nov 20, 2020 8:08 am

Hi!

Ordered a 12 string from MF and a friend told me that those guitars have horrible quality control and that the necks are breaking? I haven’t seen anything like that, but this is the right place to ask.

I asked for links of the things that supposedly are happening, but nothing yet.

Please let me know. I’m worried now.

I've had mine for about a year. Neck pocket was not cut as well as other Fenders I've owned, but otherwise quality is solid and neck has only needed a modest tweak after about a year. I think your friend is wrong.

I have 3 of these, and haven't had any trouble with the necks on mine at all.

I haven't abused them though- no stage-drops or strap-fails or even rack-tip-offs, (these are the only things I can think of that might bring 'breakage-level' danger to the neck)

I did see one at the local GC that had a crack all the way down the body (shipping damage) but the neck was great- it still played perfectly! (Wanks at GC wouldn't drop the price down for the damage- they said that it had to be sent back. >:( )

Oh, yeah- you might want to rethink your friendship with that guy. He sounds a bit loony.

Your friend is imagining things. All of the XIIs were manufactured in a short period in mid-2019 so they are all the same age.

If there were major issues with physical construction affecting them, this forum would be buzzing with such things. So far, the only report of a serious manufacturing fault that has emerged on this forum is one guy's LPB model had a pot that wasn't hooked up.

It would take an incredible amount of force to break these necks. They are fairly substantial pieces of maple.

I bought mine in March. It's fine.

I can imagine where the misinformation comes from though - a friend’s acoustic 12 string had the headstock fly right off in the middle of a gig once. And Rickenbacker 12s have a reputation for their tailpieces exploding. But as far as far as I’m aware, I’ve not heard of XIIs with issues like this. Fender makes some pretty durable guitars.

Leo Fender: *makes modular guitars where replacing anything is easy in case it breaks*
Also Leo: *makes them as durable as Nokias so you basically never need to replace anything*

Thanks Leo!

Got mine today. Finish and neck pocket, beautiful. Pickups sound fine to me since I only have danelectros and a Squier Venus as references.

It is heavy. I plugged into my JC-40 and instant sonic magic.

It needs a setup, of course. Action a bit high. I want it as low as possible.

Definitely a vintage white beauty. <3

You're right, they can be really heavy. Mine (also in oly white) is almost 11 pounds!

Now we talkin’!

Had it setup with Ernie Ball lights (or however they are called) and now it truly plays like a dream.

In love with this guitar.

Thanks guys for all the advice.
