Re: Remember a Purple Custom Shop Jaguar?
Wow, stumbled on this and it's a blast from the past for sure. Maybe a dead thread but I'll chime in. I was features editor on Guitarist mag at the time and got this super-blag assignment when Fender opened a Custom Shop office in London. I loved the guitar but I cringe now at that yard sale of pickups! Neville Marten was correct in his earlier comment that they wanted something eye-catching rather than a super trad Tele or something. Fender suggested the Blanda Floyd/LSR nut system, which did work well. I still like the Strat/Jaguar hybrid pick guard and maybe I was the first to order a Strat selector in a Jag hexagonal switch plate? It was a great guitar but I won't argue it looked pretty awkward in a 70s Elvis kind of way.
Unfortunately, I ended up needing to sell it and it went to Lark Street Music, in Teaneck, New Jersey for a fair price. No idea where it went after that. It does live on for me as I build guitars and pedals between doing video work. I took measurements from that actual body when I worked up the designs for my own models.

i'm more looking at the price of the supersonic. nearly £1000 in modern money...... or about the same as choosy beggers on reverb try to get
honestly, i find it funny how fast the supersonic dropped in value. i got one in 2006 for £60.

I saw one Vista Super Sonic at a local pawn shop... for 1500 CAD, or 1200 USD :/s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:10 pmi'm more looking at the price of the supersonic. nearly £1000 in modern money...... or about the same as choosy beggers on reverb try to get

Meanwhile the Paranormal one is 459 CAD brand new and it's still a pretty good guitar lol. Would've bought one if I didn't already have a bunch of short scales in my stable.

as much as i love the vista series, i don't think they're worth half as much as people want for themWucan wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 3:32 pmI saw one Vista Super Sonic at a local pawn shop... for 1500 CAD, or 1200 USD :/s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:10 pmi'm more looking at the price of the supersonic. nearly £1000 in modern money...... or about the same as choosy beggers on reverb try to get

There's been a huge run up on most MIJs with any imaginable sort of collectible value during the pandemic, kinda ridiculous at this point.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 1:52 am

I had a 1996 MG-69 which was admittedly fine, but these were built with notoriously soft basswood that meant a lot of dents in the finish. And the pickups are very wimpy, not very good without running it through a pedalboard. The one I had in particular, I had it shimmed to be playable and the electronics were held together by shoestrings, plus a ton of cosmetic damage from the haphazard finishing. it just wasn't a great guitar - some character sure, but clearly not built to Japan's best standards at the time and a higher end Squier off the shelf probably plays better.
Still, in my mid-sized town I put it up for sale for $700 and it was gone within 24 hours...
