Re: Musings on the Johnny Marr Jaguar
I agree that the Jag works better through a more midrangy amp. I like mine through my 90's Vox AC15 or my Swart Atomic Space Tone. That said, Johnny plays his through a Fender Blackface Deluxe and a Blackface Super, two bright amps. And his sound is... well, you know.
I swapped out the stock Bare Knuckle neck pickup for the AV65, and I like it better. I kept the stock bridge pickup.
Also agreed that I like to run mine through a compressor, but set for only slight compression and gain boost.

I have had a couple of these - stupidly sold the good ones - and.... 2 were noisy and 2 were dead quiet.
Not sure what the difference between the 2 was beyond variance.

Interesting. I've since moved my amp to the basement, which was finished in recent years, and the guitar seems much quieter. I'll do some more experimenting...

Setup is everything........5 mm shim in the neck, 52mm bridge of your choice (Mastery for me, thankyou) bridge pickup high, neck pickup as low as it goes (it still sounds good, and it makes the bridge pickup come alive (less magnetic pull perhaps?).
EP Booster and Diamond compressor always on, then other effects as needed.

Re: Musings on the Johnny Marr Jaguar
Spent some time playing the JM Jag into my Vox AC15C1-TV. WOW! The stock Bare Knuckle pickups really came alive. A huge difference from my Fender amps.Surfysonic wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 9:46 amVery happy it's coming together for you! You make an excellent point about using your Vox amp that I think will grant my Bare Knuckle pickups a reprieve. 90% of the time, I play my guitars out of my Fender amps. I'm going to start using the Marr Jag with my Vox AC15C1-TV and Allen Encore (while still Fender-ish, it's a little different). I'll probably still get some Novak JAG-V pickups to try out, but I'll put them in my Squier CV '70s Jag.
Being a brighter amp, the Vox AC15C1-TV really boosted the clarity of the BK pickups. I can now nail my surf sound. Super happy now with the BK pickups.

Interesting observation about the amps. The Man himself goes through a Deluxe Reverb

My JM Jag turned into a monster when I plugged it into my Super Beetle. WOW.

He runs through a Boss GT-500 (I think?) live, there was an interview on YouTube where he describes using the pedal like a producer. I wonder if he uses the DRRI as a blank canvas for some amp modelling as he goes.

Right - and a POD? I think he uses that as well.

Re: Musings on the Johnny Marr Jaguar
The Bare Knuckle pickups in the Marr are fairly low output, which sound great clean but will always seem noisier than higher output pickups since you need to boost them to get the same level. That's why I like using the series setting on the Marr- it basically turns the two pickups into a humbucker so you can get more output without noise. "But wait!" you say, "series mode is too dark!"- that's why Johnny and Fender thoughtfully included the series position only bright switch. I'm telling you, the Marr Jaguars are the best production Jags Fender ever made- certainly since the original run ended in the early '70s, anyway.

Re: Musings on the Johnny Marr Jaguar
Just wanted to thank you for the advice to lower the neck pup. I have a Marr Jag with Creamery Alt 88s. I'd been disappointed with the lack of contrast between the 4 pickup positions. I then tried lowering the neck pup as described and it made things so much better.Maxadur wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 5:14 amSetup is everything........5 mm shim in the neck, 52mm bridge of your choice (Mastery for me, thankyou) bridge pickup high, neck pickup as low as it goes (it still sounds good, and it makes the bridge pickup come alive (less magnetic pull perhaps?).

Re: Musings on the Johnny Marr Jaguar
The diamond compressor gets along really well with the Marr (no surprise, since that’s what he uses).
