Okay...I have always been one of those guys that takes good care of my guitars and equipment....so this whole relic guitar deal has miffed.
Why on Earth do you care? There are lots of things in the guitar world I find hideously ugly: flame tops, birds, gold hardware, etc..
So, like, I just don't buy PRSes. If you find relics aesthetically displeasing, don't buy one - you'll save money, congratulations!
Anyway, artificial aging of consumer goods has been around for centuries. Furniture, violins, the sunburst pattern on guitars, jeans, yada yada yada. Sometimes it's butt ugly, sometime it looks good.
I don't like a lot of relics but I do like the way my Danocaster's Candy Apple Red metallic has been aged to a sort of metallic peach - I'd like it just as much if that was 'just the color' with no particular aging but c'est la vie.

I've gone ahead and merged 15 years' worth of relic threads for your convenience.
And I was like
fucking hell how can a fucking relic thread has 38 pages in one day?!?

You can't just
make a giant, old thread. You have to break in a
new thread slowly over time or it all just looks wrong.
I see what you did there

I was looking at some of those new Cunife wrhb the custom shop did recently.
Nicely spec’d but man…. That contour is just too much imo!
A shop has a small run done, there’s a few others too on reverb with varying levels of completely overdone wear if you’re interested.

Different strokes for different folks.
Growing up working class, most anything I had was used. Furniture, clothes, toys, bike, etc. So as an adult, when I pay for a new item, I want it to look new. I don't buy ripped up or faded out jeans. I don't even buy pre-chopped vegetables. To me, a new guitar shouldn't even have any amber/tint coats on the maple neck. It's artificial aging and I'm not paying for it. Now that I think about it, my only vintage guitars are models that have never been reissued. I'm perfectly happy to have mostly fresh gear.

New things just get damaged anyway.
Well, if you’re a clumsy bastard like me. I always assumed the relic thing came from Poly finishes. Cos like everyone was annoyed their guitars wouldn’t look like Rory Gallagher’s, no matter how many thousands of hours you spent rubbing your sandpaper sleeved jacket on the body.

Yeah, that was really good. I don't think it got the appropriate appreciation, but bravo.

Okay… I need to apologize to the masses… I have to admit I didn’t use the search feature to find old threads about the subject. In case I don’t make it to confession this week I promise to say 25 Our Fathers as penance.
I guess I will head for my guitar workbench and beat the crap out the two offset projects I have started….

Are you are going to use a scourge to flagellate those guitars while chanting something in latin? Is that the secret to a good relic?

This one's slightly more... tasteful. Too bad about it being left-handed, in the UK and, uh $5k.

Thanks! Wonder why that didn’t show in my feed. Insane price, and who the hell wants a vintage style JM with a 10” radius????

Coda always have a good range, and you can get a better price direct. However, I wasn't overly impressed with their attitude when I bought my CS JM from them in 2020. To me, at the time, it was a big purchase and quite an important thing to spend that much on a guitar. I guess, to them, it was still a 'cheap' guitar (they sell a lot of 10-20k+ guitars) and it was very much a quick and soulless transaction on their part. Like ordering a pizza, but with less enthusiasm.
Oh well. Turned out the neck profile was not great and I moved it on shortly afterwards.

The thing that strikes me with heavily relic'd new guitars is, just imagine how bad they're going to be in 30 years time.......
