NGD: Squier Paranormal Offset Telecaster (SP)

Post by MattK » Mon Oct 03, 2022 11:56 pm

Well the wait was painful, but the new beast arrived today. I'm amazed. Absolutely brilliant guitar, bright and snarling on the bridge and quite piano-like on the neck pickup. I had a brass-saddle bridge and switched it in when I changed the strings, the stock one very very slightly cheap although it might have been the bright chrome finish. The tuners are a bit lightweight too, was thinking of switching them but the ferrules didn't fit what I had, and they are working OK.
One of the most difficult finishes to photograph that I've encountered, in person the colours have a pastel smokiness to them which just goes whitish in pics. Flawless paint job, neck is deep-glossy and the fretwork is perfect. Flatter 9.5 radius and a slightly shallower depth than I'm used to, but in play it feels so good in the hand that I don't notice. A really great neck, and the whole thing is light and alive-feeling rather than cheap-feeling. Between this and the Indonesian 50s Precision I got earlier, it's clear to me that aside from slightly cheap hardware, the build and finish quality of "premium" Squiers is right up there with the ones I love from the 80s. A different feel but great instruments. So pleased with it. Highly recommended.

Lovely looking guitar, congrats. I've always fancied a short scale version of one of these, I might have to make it a project of mine sooner rather than later.

Very nice. I've been eyeing the dakota red version with the wide range pickup in the neck.

There’s an idea! I think they are all routed the same, too.

I've the same guitar and it's a great colour in-person. Routing wise, it also has a middle pickup slot if you want to do a Nashville mod. Unsure you'd get a vintage-sized WR in the neck, though.

The stock pickups are alright too - you can get some nice Telecaster squealing out of them. A bit harsher than a pricier set, but serviceable if noise is your thing. Think I'll eventually overhaul mine because it's a great base and well worth the effort of upgrading the hardware and electronics. Until then, though, I'm enjoying mine loads. And parts aside, the finish on these is fantastic for the price. The Paranormal range is better in that regard than the small run specials Squier are pumping out.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I wonder how long I will last before tinkering, but it's a great player right out of the box and sounds like its own thing. The big poplar body is surprisingly light and very comfortable for playing.

I've been so close to buying one of these pink ones. Reckon I'd already own one if they had rosewood fretboards.

I think the dark ones are laurel … anyway the pale maple nails the pastel vibe for me!

Gorgeous guitar. I have the same one! As good as it looks in photos I think in real life it looks even better.

If these had a RW fretboard I'd actually be pretty tempted.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?
