Re: A General Consensus
I don't really have a favorite. Each gets used for somewhat different things for me, so I couldn't go without having both
I just got my first Jaguar a couple years ago though, so up until then I used only Jazzmasters. I got by just fine, but the extra versatility of having both is really nice.

Re: A General Consensus
I prefer a jazzmaster over a jaguar. But thats due to the fact that I can't stand the 24 3/4 scale of the jaguar, it just gets to cramped high up the neck.

That's exactly the same as me! I hate short necks, it really annoys me.
Also, I've edited the poll to include an option for people like i love sharin foo

Re: A General Consensus
I like both, but if I had to choose on it's the Jazzmaster...I like the mellower character to it....
it can move elegantly, smooth as silk or also crush everything in sight...like a freight train out of control....
I kinda like that

Yeah, I kinda like the whole "freight train out of control" picture you're painting!zhivago wrote: I like both, but if I had to choose on it's the Jazzmaster...I like the mellower character to it....

Re: A General Consensus
imho, both are fantastic guitars. however, the jag scale is actually only 24"... not the 24 3/4 "Gibson" scale. so the jag is a seriously short scale guitar lol. but again... i LOVE both!!Yannic wrote: I prefer a jazzmaster over a jaguar. Re: A General Consensus
I like the looks of the jaguar better, but again the whole short scale thing gets in the way. Plus I can hide humbuckers under the JM pickup covers for more versatility!
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

Jazzmaster all the way. Not that I don't love Jags too, but I can't live without a Jazzmaster.

Re: A General Consensus
I voted Jaguar. I could have easily voted "love them both" but since I never owned a Jazzmaster I wouldn't know how I'd get along with it in the long term. However I will probably pick one up in the near future.
I particularly love Jaguars because of the shorter 24" scale which feels similar to my other (Gibson style) guitars. This combined with the jangly sounding pickups and 1M pots makes for an interesting mix. I really like the neck of my '64, it's a bit narrower than typical (it's labeled as a B but it's inbetween A and B width) but I actually like that.

Re: A General Consensus
Hmm. I always thought Jags had the "gibson" scale. Well I must say I really like the way a Jag looks and sounds, but I still prefer a jazzmaster over a jag. And perhaps one day I will actually buy myself a jag, because I think the two look awesome together. But still, the jazzmaster has the playability going for it, and the jag hasn't ( atleast, not from my point of view)DeadPenny wrote:imho, both are fantastic guitars. however, the jag scale is actually only 24"... not the 24 3/4 "Gibson" scale. so the jag is a seriously short scale guitar lol. but again... i LOVE both!!Yannic wrote: I prefer a jazzmaster over a jaguar. Re: A General Consensus
I voted for Jazzmaster, all though I quite like jags. The Jazzmaster has a better scale length for me, and I find the Jag switches just too impractical for quick pickup changes.

Re: A General Consensus
Well, I say Jaguar. I wanted something different to the usual guitar designs, so the 24 inch scale is a plus for me. I have skinny fingers, so I don't find the upper frets particularly cramped.
Anyway, you want "cramped", try a 22 inch scale Mustang.

Re: A General Consensus
I like both, they're rahter similar but different at the same time.
On one hand, they are two of the most comfortable guitars to play for me, for some reason scale length does not bother me either way, and the trem system is excellent. Don't have any beefs with the bridge either.
As far as sound, I tend to favor the neck pickup more on the Jazzmaster, whereas on the Jaguar I'm more apt to run full gain and full tilt on the bridge pickup, or playing clean with both on, or a heavy fuzz on the rhythm circuit on both guitars.
