This looks more like a Mustang than a Duosonic, as it has the Mustang trem tailpiece. It also has the phase switches from a Mustangwhich I don't think the Duo had

IIRC the Duo Sonic II (post-'64/'65?) had the phase switches.  As for the trem it'd depend on whether it was original equipment or not.

Neither ever had 3 pickups.

Thurston just put a mustang vibrato on it and it only has a 5 way switch for the 3 pickups just like a strat has.
As for the pickgaurd,i spose he changed that too and you can see theres white paint under the pickgaurd where the phase switches would be,hence ther is no route so its a pre phase switch duosonic.

I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't just a regular Mustang with a DuoSonic neck. DuoSonics from 1964 until they were discontinued had the phase switches, identical to a Mustang. I doubt he'd have added a Mustang tremolo to a DuoSonic body - that's a lot of work on a cheap guitar. Mustang, DuoSonic and Musicmaster necks are all stamped the same and are interchangeable.

as corona said, it has no routes for the switches. it is definitely a duo sonic.

a mustang tailpiece and its routes isn´t that hard to add. screwdriver/chisel... hammer... bang bang, chop chop, screw screw... done!

Wait a minute... it's an offset body. That makes it a '64 or later, and ALL those bodies have the channel route for the switches above the pickups(Mustang/DuoII/MusicmasterII).

The pre-'64 Duo and MM used a NON-OFFSET body, and were routed for a toggle switch on the lower horn.

That thing is just a mutt, you can't tell what it is or was...

I'd probably be inclined to think its a transitional parts guitar or something cause its neither a standard duo or a  mustang.
True,it's impossible to say what it is now but its a cool guitar non the less.

What's strange to me is that the guard was obviously custom-cut for three pickups. So why not omit the switch cutouts as well?

Maybe there are routes under there, but they're blcoked off by some shielding or something. Odd the shielding would be white, but go figure.

It could also be an aftermarket body... but again, why would the guard be cut for switches in the first place?

It could be a store-bought replacement guard, with extra pickup routes cut into it, rather than a custom made one. That seems more likely to me.

I suspect it's a Duosonic with added pups and whammy, most likely scavanged from a destroyed Mustang.

It's certainly possible that the switch routes are there but just covered by something stuck to the pickguard from underneath.
