Gotta love those bar gigs - Bass VI hybrid rig content

Post by SPudnik » Tue Jan 30, 2007 9:36 pm

Recently did some bar-gigs [trio w/ Acoustic Guitar, some electric, Drums and Bass VI] - complete with rough-housing, fights, smoke, pool, loud patrons, beer, girls dancing with each other ::) - all that fun stuff.

Funny thing is that the drummer owns the place! And he's pretty good. Very cool situation.
Rock & Roll, baby. - [My roots are in R&B, jazz and other weird stuff, but to do a r&r blowout occasionaly is fun]

On the last nite I decided to use the standard rig: old EV B115 cab, Biamp [bridged] 420w pwr amp and Rane 5-band parametric, with the addition of my little (1 10" speaker) Pignose G40V 5 tube guitar amp just for the high end. Essentially 2 separate systems in tandem.

I was able to seamlessly go into guitar territory when called for, and get big bottom at the same time, so when the guitar guy did a solo I supported the harmony. Some of it turned into Cowboy Central with that twangy baritone Western vibe - thanks to the small but mighty Pignose. All this without tweeking. 'Just used the tone knob on the VI, and boosted the low band EQ when the bridge pickup was soloed.

Anybody use a similar rig?
Highly recommended for VI people.

Wow, that's pretty close to what I intend to use when my VI gets finished. I have a Bassman 100 with en EV 15 and an Ampeg 2x10. I run through a Bass Pod Pro and have a G40V ready for overdrive work. I'm so looking forward to getting my VI back in action.

How do you find your G40V? I put a Weber AlNiCo 10 and it's really nice, plus I moded the BIAS circuit and added a few nice bits like a proper power connector and rubber feet. I just put Philips 5751 preamp tubes in so I can get a cleaner sound at higher volumes. I want to change the trannys as well at some stage.

Sounds like an intersting place to hang out! 8)

I really like it - an unexpected gift from a friend.
Haven't made any mods yet, and the ones you did seem like good ones... I wish it had a pre-out for recording - I did a stupid thing by taking the speaker output to a mixer channel and kept the vol knob at a minimum for obvious reasons. Didn't blow it up but managed to burn an output tube... The few recordings I made with this config were superb.  8)

Sookster - yea the dancing chickas were the best part of the nite  ::)
No pics, but one of them apparently is a drummer and even knows the 26 Rudiments...
Man, a girl/girl dancer with a good sense of rhythm! Sheesh... ...
