Post by Light Rail Coyote » Sun Apr 01, 2007 11:06 am

Hi guys.I'm new here, and have a jazzmaster question. I am going to build a jazzmaster body and was wondering if anyone knows exactly haw thick the body is. I know they started making them thinner around 1960, but I cant find the actuall measurement anywhere. well I was told you guys would know.\

The CIJ (94, I think) body I have is approximately 4cm thick.

Welcome, Light Rail Coyote!

I have a '59. I don't have a caliper, so I used the famous "hillbilly method" to measure it... with a tape measure. It was difficult because of the radiused edges, but it sure looked like 1 11/16".  I realize this is not a very accurate way of measuring , but it should be fairly close.

The change occurred in mid-to-late '59 and should have been fully phased in by '60... as you mention. I don't have a later body at the moment, but I believe mine is the first version.

I do have an Allparts body... it looks like 1 9/16". I don't know what they based it on.

I realize these aren't great answers, but ihope it helped some. Hopefully someone will chime in with precise measurements.

Enjoy the forum!

Comparing a '59, '61 and '62, the difference between the body depths is pretty hard to measure actually .. I can feel (and even see) that the '59 is thicker in the body, but it's hard to quantify just holding a ruler across it as I don't have calipers either. It looks like about 39mm for the '59 and 38mm for the other two.
