This one's a pet peeve of mine, but luckily for me, it's not an acronym, so I don't have to worry about it! :D
[snobbery]
Actually, very few of these words are actually true acronyms- I doubt even offsetters would refer to CAR as "car" except when typing, or AVRI as "avrey". In truth, these are mostly just abbreviations or initializations. Acronyms are words made from initials.

:ph34r:

+100000000

Abbreviation - Shortened version of a word, which may or may not be pronounced as a word. i.e. USA, AVRI, LED, etc.

Acronym - A form of abbreviation that is pronounced as a word. i.e. LASER, FUBAR, ChiPs.

99% of the listed abbreviations in the original post are NOT acronyms. Perhaps the thread title should be updated? ;)

Also, I find "PUPS" annoying as well. Why would anyone abbreviate it like that? I use PU or just spell it out. :)

If you'd like! I think acronym is a more recognizable catchall term in common usage despite its technical inaccuracy (like 'tremolo' referring to vibrato on a guitar), but I'm never opposed to grammatical correctness!

Does "teh" mean anything? Or is it just a typo?

I've seen BM for Bandmaster and Lux for either vibrolux or tremolux and IIRC if I recall correctly

SGD - Smashed Guitar Day. Not a good feeling and not to be done unless you have a really good recording contract. Yes, I've been there!

Learned a new one last week: RWRP= reverse wound reverse polarity.
I was unaware of this until I read it while researching the Brownsville Choirboy 12-string I found on cl for 75 bucks. In Farfisa green! A very cool jangling rhythm player; not a Ric, but a keeper, for sure.

Thanks for pointing that out. Should have been SGD. Obviously the painful memories of losing two acoustic guitars in the last 10 years to untimely accidental deaths and a further one to malicious damage by another (a rather fine Washburn EA26 Craig Chaquico Signature Model) affected my ability to form an acronym or an abbreviation! I did trash my first electric on purpose though a while back just for fun - a cheap Les Paul copy which I was going to throw out anyway. For those who haven't trashed an electric, it's not as easy as it looks!

That is a good point. Popular usage and all that.

I had to look it up... I believe it means "for the win" although a lot of people my age (cue the creaking rocking chair) would take it to mean something quite different...

FWIW = for what it's worth
FYI = for your information
FTW = for the win! (it took me years to get that one)
DIY = do-it-yourself
FB = facebook
YT = youtube
ADIDAS = all day i dream about sex :D
RI = reissue
DOA = dead on arrival

those ok?

Pat.

I still think my original wrong definition of FTW as "for the world" is the best one.

As for thread titles, I like "AVRI JM GAS, what the hell? Abbreviations and acronyms explained."

Well done to Carb for starting and maintaining the thread. I suggested it for I was too lazy to do it... :blush:

Updated with a bunch of stuff. Again, trying to keep the less guitar-related stuff off, but there've been a lot of great ones suggested that I just plain overlooked! Thanks!

Let's not forget FML... when you're having a bad day and get "sniped" on eBait, just as you're abotu to get a killer deal on an offset.

FTR, for the record, FML means "fook my life". Intentional misspelling.
