Just curious - why don't US pickguards fit on CIJ Jazzmasters?  I'm looking at a picture of a 1963 Jazzmaster:



and comparing it with a photo of my new CIJ:



I count the same number of screws in the same places.

Am I just too drunk?  What am I missing?

Is that the original pickguard on yours?  I thought the CIJ guards were plain white.  That looks aged or mint colored.  I like it! 

I tried to put a CIJ Pickguard on my AVRI Jazzmaster a while ago. The screws aren't the problem, the actual CIJ Pickguards are smaller than USA or AVRI guards. They just don't fit so none of the screw holes will match up, and the thumb wheels and switches won't line up either.

Trust me I tried to make it work...it don't.

don't think the screws line up. i've also heard CIJ guards are a little smaller

Yeah, it's mint.  I thought it was white from the photos on Ishibashi, and my digital camera always tries to white balance for it too when I take photos of it, but it's mint green.  It never shows up in photos.

I also kind of like it, but when I thought it was going to be white originally I had planned on immediately changing it so I looked up all sorts of stuff about pickguards and found out the US ones won't fit on CIJ guitars.  I thought I had read they had a different number of screws, like 13 vs. 11 or something like that, so when I saw these photos I was like "huh?"  But I guess they could be a slightly different size and you wouldn't even know it unless you tried it... as seems to be the case I guess... oh well.

Woops... well, as I said, I was drunk

btw, is it that the whole body of the CIJ's is smaller or just the pickguard?  The pickguard looks the same size in relation to the guitar in the two photos.  (If anything the CIJ guard looks bigger to me in relation to the guitar; there seems to be a little less body between the pickguard and the edge of the guitar on the top, near the neck.)

FOR a CIJ or MIJ the AVRI are off a little bit, but with a bit of filing  here and there it will fit. Biggest issue were the roller pots and the bridge with a bit around the bridge pick up. Not all the screw holes line up but if you don't mind a few missing screws and a bit of filing it will be fine. I recently put a AVRI on my 87 MIJ and I am pleased with the results.
