I've never had one, but one of the local Music Go Rounds has one (I may just give it a spin after I'm done at work here today [in the next hour or so]). I've heard one of the store salesclerks playing it, and it's a pretty good sounding guitar - kind of a hybrid of a Gibson and a Fender soundwise. It looks pretty well made too. They have it on sale for $240.

I don't own one but I tried one at my local musicstore! So...for the price it's a nice offset with charm and a quite nice tone but theres so much missing the vintage original galaxie had and I think that's the sad about it..it's like taking the circuits off a jag .. But all in all a nice guitar to mod or to "vintagize"!

I tried one out yesterday. In a nutshell, it was a diamond in the rough. The mini buckers were OK. The roller bridge seemed kind of finicky tuningwise. My main quibble, was the pickup selection - you do it via three on/off swiches, positioned above each pickup, ala a Fender Mustang. For my playing style (I typically rest my hand on the bridge, and pick from my wrist), the on/off switch for the bridge pickup sometimes got in my way playingwise (ditto for the middle pickup - I'd have to lower it down towards the body). It has potential as a guitar, but it needs some work - as I said, a diamond in the rough.

I really wish they would have reissued the 177 instead of the galaxie.

Kinda interested in this guitar again. I was put off HB guitars without coil splits, but they sound a bit brighter. Do you think you could get single coily sounds out of a bright enough amp?

I played one a little while ago and wasn't really impressed. Good as an upgrade from a beginner guitar, but nothing worth writing home about. If it was ~200$, I'd recommend it more.

Yeah I think this was my thoughts when I played one. The parts felt cheap, the frets were sharp and the trem was awful - so tight it was untrue. Buckers were ok, nothing to get excited about and it was only really the pickup variations that was a selling feature. When I think I could get a Squier VM Jazzmaster for the same money in the UK then the Hofner doesnt stand a chance.

There's a beaut of a vintage Galaxie on eBay right now (no affiliation). How do these things play? IIRC, George Harrison had a Hofner before his first Gretsch and said it was horrible to play.
