"This is my guitar .. there are many others like it ..

Post by mezcalhead » Thu May 31, 2007 11:13 pm

.. but this one is mine.
Without me it is nothing.
Without my guitar I am nothing .. "

So StevenO's recent post
I'm just still looking for that one guitar that says "I'm the guitar that was meant for you, Steven Osorio, pick me up, play me, love me, hold me" but none of the guitars I have boughten have said that to me as of yet,
continued a train of thought I had that started when I was reading Andy Summers' biography and he says of his Telecaster
Maybe you only get one real instrument in your life as a guitar player. For me, it is this 1961 Tele.

.. so do you have a number one guitar, the only one you really need, the guitar which might not be all that special to others but fits perfectly for you?

Here's mine, a bit of a partsmaster .. familiar to many of you I guess, it's a 1961 Jazzmaster put together with rescued pieces: '61 neck and (refinished) body, '62 pickups, most of the rest of the parts are aftermarket. I had planned to gradually replace the aftermarket parts with vintage parts but it plays so well I don't want to fiddle with it. I've had more expensive and more authentic guitars, but this is the one that works the best for me, the neck is like they personally measured my left hand and tailored it to match ..

If you've found yours, whatever it is, offset or not, let's see it and hear why it's the guitar for you! .. or if you haven't, what do you think it would be like? .. or if you don't subscribe to Andy's theory, why not .. ?

well this is my 63 JM. it's been with me since '92 or so.

It has been "indo-rocked" as the plugs on the back of the headstock indicate. When I received it, it had those 4 extra holes in the headstock.
It had holes in the body finish from stickers that had been removed. It has seen the worst spray-paint re-fin (by me) a guitar could possibly have..

In 95 I decided to give it to a luthier for a headstock repair and refin. The decal you see on the photo I removed just recently and replaced it
with a silkscreened fenderbob decal (thanks Yannis). It looks much better now than the one in the picture.

My affection with this particular guitar is beyond reason. It has been dropped, mistreated, seen so many rehearsals and gigs, I forgot it in a bar & got it back,
it is my absolute favorite. I have been through alot of guitars, but I hope I will keep this one until the day I die. It resides in my bed. It has the nicest of broken
in necks I have ever played. It plays like butter, even with 12s. The sound is clear, smooth and defined. I don't deserve it. I don't mind about the refin or the headstock. If I had the money, I would ask a pro pro pro luthier to make an exact copy of the guitar, down to the latest detail, just for the sake of it. And it would
not be the same, but maybe make a good backup.

... this one is mine.
Without me it is perfectly fine,
without my guitar I am not nothing.

But I love it.
Nobody exists on purpose.

ok, I think everyone knows what my #1 is, but I'll give you guys the lowdown :)

1961 Fender Jazzmaster....slab board, neck penciled 1/61, sports a type one decal too...Pat Pend tailpiece etc etc

This is my favourite Jazzmaster ever...it initially sported a rare Ash body. I really wanted my #1 to be Black though, so I swapped over another '61 body that I bought from Andrew Award...this one's Alder, and as some of you know, I did the refin in nitro myself. ...that made it feel even more like "my" guitar...

In order to get this one, I sold a 1967 Jazzmaster I had.

Then I fell on hard times last summer and I was torn between the 1964 Gold Jazzmaster (now owned by Mezcalhead) and this '61....I could only keep one...

it was a heartbreaking shootout, but in the end the '61 prevailed due to the neck profile....both guitars sounded and played very, very nice....but due to my hand size, it had to be the '61....

it has a beefy neck on it that suits my hands better...the sound now that it sports the Alder body is slightly more dense...maybe a tad sweeter...I still love it to bits and have no regrets about swapping over the bodies.

Talking about the bits...this is essentially a partsmaster too....Fullerplast sold it to me, and basicaly he had collected some of the best bits off ebay, all dating to 1961...the sum of parts sounds and feels amazing.

At the moment, I have swapped out the original bridge for a Mustang bridge....the reason being I need to detune the E to A for a couple of songs in the band I play, and the original saddles would occasionaly flip over!  :o

I will put the stock bridge back on one day :)

the other non-original part is the Klusons...I have swapped around some Gotoh replacements, as the originals were a bit tamperamental for quick tuning while onstage....they are fine for home playing though, so one day, these will go back on the guitar too.

so yeah, that's about it I guess.

I call her Lenka  :-*

Haven't found a guitar that's perfect for me yet, but I hope to one day.
'61 seems to have been a good year for Fender though...

my #1. my baby. my 2000 Squier Jagmaster in silver sparkle.

this guitar is funny, because its the nicest guitar i have ever played bar none. i traded a cherry red epiphone dot for it. BEST TRADE EVER.

the neck is amazing. the guy who had it before me played surf on it and it came strung up with .12 guage flatwounds. yikes.

did a setup with .10s, slapped a seymour duncan phat cat in there and bam. amazing.

sounds great, feels like heaven, looks ace. i love her and she will never leave me.

Any excuse to post it again. Definitely my #1 even though I'm on the acoustic a lot at the moment...

Another partsmaster I guess. Though I still like to call it a '59.

'59 refinned body, electrics, klusons & bridge pickup
'60 neck
'65 neck pickup
repro bridge cover, chrome knobs & trem tip

I'm getting closer to buying a Mustang (looks like being a 1st or 2nd year white & tort. Fuck the competition stripes. I've gone off them.) so my #1 may change soon!!

I read the Andy Summer's autobiography too! I thought it was great, very inspiring and just flat-out interesting and funny. The way he talked about his Telecaster reminded me of the way I talk about my red guitar. I've played a lot of guitars and my life, but nothing's played better than her or felt like such an organic part of me. She's not an official Offset, but I hope you guys won't hold it against me.

She's not exactly shiny, she'll never look like a new guitar, but she's mine. Every single quirk and imperfection she gained from the endless tinkering of clumsy hands somehow came together into something perfect.

She'll have her work cut out for though! I'm building the Jazzmaster of my dreams right now  ;D

You're saying it's not an Ibanez jetking customized? (I'm not sure if the correct name is jetking.. ???)

I'm not sure that I agree with the theory in general. I think it's pretty normal to have a favorite one of anything but it takes a retrospective view to turn that into a semi-mystical theory. Despite my love for the things, I've got a very utilitarian view of them when we consider the function of the tool that they are. Ultimately, I view this theory in the same light that I would if a carpenter told me he could only build houses with his favorite hammer.

This doesn't mean that the theory doesn't hold true for some though. It just doesn't hold for me. Of course, that could be because I haven't stumbled across that one guitar yet either and I'm more than willing for that to be a possibility. Perhaps one lurks out there that will change my mind.  :)

The closest I can get really is a partial priority list for when the house is on fire: 1. '76 LP Custom, 2. '94 LE JM, and it gets misty from there. Even so, this is sorted on sentimentality and not musicality or function.
Bigger in sum than parts.

no you're right, that's what it is, jet king 2 to be precise. i've just messed with it more times than i care to remember, actually the cost of all the mods i've done to the poor thing have long since exceeded the original price of the guitar. but i had fun doing it, so no worries.

MY problem is that I find a guitar that says that to me about once every six to nine months!  First it was an Ibanez Artcore, then a Jay Turser thinline tele, then a Schecter Ultra III, then an epi custom SG and, most recently, my JM!  Thank God I've only been at this for a couple of years or that list would be a WHOLE lot longer!
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

it's a real production guitar that you can buy, an ibanez jet king 2. it just has a long & boring story behind it. i essentially rescued it from the trash can. it was this ugly orange colored thing, looked abused as hell and had been stripped of most of its parts (basically just a body, a neck, and a couple screws here and there). my friend was going to throw it away but i said i'd take it off his hands. he was like  :-[ "alright, whatever dude." i took it home and worked out what i wanted it to look like. the rest, as they, is history.

here's what it would've looked like had i got it when it was still a whole guitar:

whenever i see that orange finish, i  :k
