Do I wait for one or get another? JM topic

Post by SteveCic » Thu Jun 14, 2007 11:23 am

Okay. SO.

Store A has a black AVRI in the shop, and they said they'd give it to me for 1200. The only problem is the 3rd fret sticks out a bit on the thumb side.

Store B is a chain, and my company has a great relationship with the local branch and their manager. He said he ordered me the guitar and will give to me for less than 1200.

Do I wait for store B to get it or do i just go to store A and get it tomorrow?

if the guitar at the shop sounds and feels great, I'd get them to fix the fret problem and buy it.

the guitar ordered through the chain could turn out to be a lemon.

agreed. one fret with a problem = no problem. 12 problem frets = lemon.

+1!

Although the second might be black too. But I agree, since you have had a chance to try the one in the shop firsthand and like it, I would go with it. With the appropriate file, the fret issue can be cured in about 3 minutes.

Not necessairly.  Protruding frets is a fact of life on newer guitars made with woods that haven't been aged as in the old days.  Rosewood boards can be somewhat of a problem, ebony boards can really accentuate the problem.  The problem is also increased in dry climates (like where I live!).  If a guitar is built in a humid climate and shipped to a dry one, frets may protrude.

It's an issue that usually only needs to be fixed once.  And with only 1 fret being a problem, it would be really cheap for a qualified tech to fix quickly.

I also vote to get the guitar you can play now - you know it's strengths and weaknesses.  Ordering one is a crapshoot.

Have you tried out any other jazzmasters to compare this one to? If you haven't, there is always the chance that you might like this guitar despite it being a lemon but you don't know any better because you have nothing to compare it to.

yea i didnt really man it like that. i just figure a guitar with all frets protruding usually means they don't care about it at the store. wouldn't make it a lemon, but make me weary to pay full price. they should fix it.

I agree completely.  Sometimes a guitar maker gets blamed for bad workmanship when it's the retailer that didn't maintain the instrument.  Guitar Center comes to mind...

UPDATE!

so i went on the guitar center site, and the inventory update said they were getting black JM's on 6/14/07 which was obviously yesterday. so i e-mailed my guy at GC and i'm waiting to hear back from him.

i can't wait to hear this through my dual recto.

p.s.-my boss just got a custom shop one off JM..i don't know the exact model but it's a relic and the neck was sanded down, and it sounds and plays phenomenally

yes, the GC here is usually pretty good. One time however, they had a few really nice MIM Telecasters. Great wood, awesome finishes, great sounding pickups. the problem was the protruding frets. I mentioned it and just got puzzled looks. Needless to say, i didn't go home with one.
