Re: Bass V
I played one for the first time ever yesterday at Warpdrive music here in Milwaukee. It is Candy Apple red and has a good amount of wear. I couldn't believe how big the bass it. The neck is huge, the headstock and body are huge, the neckplate is like twice as long as a normal neck plate. It looked really cool. I will try and get back there and take some pics. They are asking $4500 for it.
They are had an olympic white jaguar w/ gold hardware from 1962 and that was also worth drooling over.

I'd love to own one. Not a HUGE fan of the body shape but I could grow to love it. I'm not sure how they sound exactly but I'm sure they sound fine. I like the idea of having just the lower portion of the neck and upper register of the neck on an extra string. It's interesting.

Re: Bass V
I'd really like to get one, if I were to ever get a 5 string. But I've always been interested in maybe extending the fretboard... maybe find a super thrashed one, so I wouldn't feel horrid about altering a beautiful clean Bass V. See, the lacking number of frets has always been a turn off to me. But add, say 5 or 6 more, and you've got a legit bass. But without those frets, in the history of music, this bass went down to become the bastard stepchild of the bass world of the time... but, hey, it was a nice first jab at the 5 string. Even though it wasn't tuned the way of a "modern" 5. Anyhow, what would you guys think if I tracked one down, somehow extended the fretboard, and cut into the body some to allow access to the new frets? Just an idea I've been kicking around,

Re: Bass V
It'll probably never happen. You'd have to find a really, really beat up one. Considering not many were made, I'd feel pretty bad ruining even a trashed one, if there are anymore in the world that are trashed. DB got one that had quite a few neck issues, but that's about it.

Yeah, definitely .. you'd be better off putting together an aftermarket version rather than hacking up a vintage one.StevenO wrote: Considering not many were made, I'd feel pretty bad ruining even a trashed one, if there are anymore in the world that are trashed.

Re: Bass V
Yeah, I have one in the restoration process now. I'd never hack one up to add frets, there are just too few of these around. Also the body joint behind the heel of the neck is about 1/2 again longer than a regular Fender bass, and would make playing above the 15th pretty tough anyway.
