It has standard jazzmaster wiring from the looks of it and from what it reads as...

I'm in Illinois, far from any cities. That's why it is so difficult to find any offsets. It was a fluke to walk in the shop looking for an offset knowing the odds were against finding one, and the first thing I saw was this sparkly purple and gold thing hanging on the wall in an individual display case, like a rarity or something. I thought it was Custom Shop or vintage. They also had a CAR AVRI Jag. Like I said earlier, the kid at the shop knew nothing about the guitar other than the shop owner got it through a fender rep earlier than he should have. He then quoted me a price of $720.
where at in illinois?

My Fender rep brought the JM JM in today for us to check out.  It's pretty sweet!  The neck is pretty chunky compared to my CIJ or AVRI.  The pickups are stock CIJ.  The bridge is mounted like a standard TOM.  The satin neck was more like a semi-gloss, really.  I thought it was a pretty slick guitar overall.

i played one today at sam ash in midtown nyc. felt pretty nice, i usually don't like big frets but the neck in general was comfy, felt solid, more solid than my sunburst b&b cij. didn't plug it in though.

I saw one here in Tucson over the weekend. I too thought it was a custom shop model, but they said no. The guard is NOT gold, it's freaking yellow. I didn't get to handle it. It was in the repair shop getting setup prior to going out to the floor.

I stumbled across one in an online store here in Germany - it's freaking 1.049.- Euros! Geez. Check your currency converters...

The specs say it's basswood...  ???

Nothing wrong with Basswood per se.... it's a good tone wood and tends to be nice and light.

But don't they use Alder for all the Bodies these days? Just wondering...

Yeah, alder is pretty much the wood. Maybe basswood was a Mascis choice or was available at a more favorable pricepoint to offset the other features?

Basswood is a pretty good tonewood, really. It's about the same as an alder body, but a bit warmer. However, it's also softer than alder and will ding really easily. Most people who use it for furniture and the like treat it with a chemical hardner, that makes it more resistant to dings. I suspect that additional hardness would make it a little brighter. Nothing wrong with it, really.

I like basswood. It's probably the only reason that my stock MIJ pickups have lasted as long as they have.
Bigger in sum than parts.
