I believe the exact consensus is "looks like ass and sucks mammoth-sized donkey dick". Or maybe that's just my take.

I think it would actually look pretty killer with a blackguard on black scheme with nickel hardware. But as an AmSpec with no AmStan, not so much.

boohoo it isn't the exact same guitar they've been making since 1959 boohoo
open your minds a little bit, folks, it won't kill you. i can't really think of any reason to hate on the thing this much besides just a refusal to accept anything besides the exact model leo showed us way back when. gimme a break, even if you hate it this much at least some people who can't get along with the standard configuration might be able to enjoy a jazzmaster at last. offset guitars may have been a club of elitists for a long time but that doesn't mean it needs to stay that way.

I try to be open minded about all offset releases. I remember when Nirvana blew up and I was a poor college dude that couldn't afford either a vintage Jag or a Japanese reissue that I would have given my left nut to have the options that are available now. I was actually super stoked at the Squier vista jagmaster when it was announced. I literally placed an order before they were released and probably had the first one in my town. I knew that it wasn't "correct" but it was sonic blue and I could afford it.... barely. Anyway, I could get down with this guitar. It certainly wouldn't fill the role of my main Jazzmaster because it really isn't a jazzmaster. However, I already have a jazzmaster so if I bought this it would be because it is different and would fill a different role in my arsenal. I think it is a bit strange that they chose humbuckers in JM sized pickups which will mean that in no way could it sound remotely jazzmasterish. I think the neck pup should have been an AVRI single coil pup at the very least. The biggest complaint has to be color selection... so here I go again. Black and sunburst literally make no sense at all on this guitar. They already put out the CP JM and blacktop JM in those colors. Hasn't everyone on the planet that wants a JM in those colors already bought one by now? If they had released this guitar in cool colors, I bet at least some people here would at least be more receptive to them but maybe that is just me.
Several months ago I saw a band from Canada called Metz at a local venue. They are amazing BTW. The guitarist was playing a Jazzmaster with a buzzstop. He doesn't use the trem at all. It was refreshing to hear a band that was that loud and "hard", playing what is normally unfairly dismissed as a more mellow guitar. If this guitar had regular JM pups, this kind of player would have maybe been all over it. Just sayin', there is a lot of types of music that can use a JM or Jag and I think Fender is wisely trying to make sure they have one for whomever may need a certain mix of features. I mean, if all they did was release everything to vintage spec then the line would have stopped with AVRI. I do think an American Standard should have happened first, there is a huge hole in the lineup as it stands now in price range. We need a good USA made option in the 1000 to 1200 dollar range. Sorry for the long post.... just been thinking about this a lot.

The way I see it, there are few characteristics that make JM what it is. IMO:
Jazzmaster 'usual' characteristics
Shape: YES
Body/Neck material: YES
Scale length: YES
Pickups: NO (Humbuckers)
Switching: NO
Tremolo: NO (Anchored tailpiece)
So, it has the 'right' shape, wood, scale length. It does not have pickups, switching and tremolo associated with JM. If the first three are more important, or the former three are not a dealbreaker, than this is one nice guitar, plus it's American made.
I personally would probably not go for it, but each to their own.
If AVRI 65 would be less expensive, than American Standard would not be necessary. I don't see the place for American Standard, except for the lower price and maybe different radius. All other mods would bring it closer to existing models (hotter pickups, different position for Tremolo etc), IMO.

You know, I was just thinking..
This is like the american blacktop jazzmaster.
Basic looks, high output humbuckers, yup. I'm sure of it.
It does plug a small hole in the JM lineup. The only other hardtials are the Squier
and the ever loved, immensely popular fender select
I'm sure not getting one but I guess they think the demand is there.
