Fender to eliminate MSRP on July 7 2014

So you know, starting July 7 Fender will be ditching "Manufacturer Suggested Retail Pricing" on any Fender branded products in North America. They'll give dealers through the end of the year to lose the list prices from catalogs, web, etc. The "Minimum Advertised Price" will be the regular price all over. Basically they want to ditch the confusion of having a second imaginary higher price nobody's ever really paid.

How will Guitar Center sell any if they can't advertise them as 40% off?

Don't forget confused rubes who get all bent out of shape when they see the 'list' price and get all bent out of shape.

So are they bending twice? Like a pretzel?

I'm so confused.

Yes and yes. When the bent out of shape get bent out of shape things are VERY bent out of shape. Rold Gold style.

And in regards to the MSRP, why in God's name has it taken this long to abandon the idiotic idea of MSRP? You would have to have an IQ of 26 to think that anybody, anywhere, ever, even once paid $2874.99 for a new AV65 Jazzmaster. "Your savings... $575.00!!!" Please shut up... Don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining.

I tend to think the world is populated primarily by idiots, but come on... has this approach ever fooled anybody?

That pretty much what you pay in 'Yurp (and it's even worse in Australia IIRC).

2742.36 US Dollar A quick Google shows even higher prices. Obviously, you can haggle but most UK guitar shops seem to be stuffed with pricks who think even a paltry 10% off is 10% too much.

I might refer you back to the debacle at JC Penney a couple years back when they abandoned 'sales' for 'everyday low pricing'. People stayed away in droves when they didn't believe they were getting a 'deal'... even when the 'sale' price is what it costs six weeks out of eight. It's a scam, but people love it.

I hear what yer sayin, BUT that being said full retail price DOES actually exist alot out there, more than most realize.
Walk into any music store on Main St in Nashville and you will be surprised. MSRP vs. street price is a big saving and but isn't always there.
Working in music retail for a long, long time now I do see it still, but the more readily available places always have a huge savings. (Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, Sweetwater, online shops etc). Us modern era gear buyers just don't see the prices at the "FULL price" at mom and pop type shops as much, but they certainly do exist out there.

It's about time. The whole MSRP thing was an odd relic of the pre-internet age, when you couldn't instantly find out the actual standard street price of an instrument.

It's going to hit the mom and pops much harder than GC and MF, who always price at MAP anyway. But only chumps pay retail. Ever see a MIM standard strat on CL where the guy claims he paid $700 for it and is asking $495? He;s likely telling the truth and is just a very bad shopper.

There's a huge music store near me that I never shop at. Biggest Taylor dealer in the state, he claims. But he charges full retail on everything. Terrible reputation among local musicians, but I'm sure he sells a lot to people that don't have the internet.

Gibson actually did this http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electri ... S-390.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; there is the gibson site and this is the guitar with the same msrp http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ ... 13SEvw_wcB" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that is the same guitar but sweetwater claims a higher msrp there is no guitar with that msrp that matches that so i dont know where they are even getting the sale price from.

Oh man! You could be right. This reminds me of when they shuffled the line in recent years, so the upper tier Mexican made models basically took the place of the lower tier US models, and so on throughout the line. Quality went up, but prices did too. I remember dreaming for Custom Shop Teles and it seemed like Wildwood consistently had NOS CS Teles for around 2500, then over night it was all like 3500 starting price for any CS Fender, when they restructured or whatever. I was a little bummed out, since they're that much further from my grasp. They just keep that carrot a little further than you can reach...
