Anyone ever deliberately mismatch headstock and body colors?

Here is Old Gregg, my mishmash monster jm. It's labelled as a Fender and it has parts as such, but it's a new MJT body and an old Elk Viking Neck. In the future, I may change the guard to a tortoiseshell and get some nicer vintage correct tone and volume knobs, but for now it'll do.

The ones with the black headstocks remind me a little bit of the various Contemporary series models from the late 80s.

Re: Anyone ever deliberately mismatch headstock and body col
That's where I got my idea from when I saw that TVL neck.. I sometimes think of getting an oxblood pickguard - this would be totally radgutter rock wrote:I think black head stocks really work if the pickguard is black. Hey, it was good enough for Lee and Thurston
But I don't know who could pull that off?
I'll do a mock up in Gimp later :-D

I like where you are heading with this, NICQ.
I am sure that there are lots of good options, but the boring old Fender American Vintage "brown" tort pickguards are not too far from the "Oxblood" (is it kind of purple?) that you seek. They are a bit darker in hue that the rather red looking guard that is on you Jazzmaster now, which I think looks great in its own right.
Here is one of these Fender "browner" tort guards on my AV65 Jaguar:

Re: Anyone ever deliberately mismatch headstock and body col
hey,
yeah I have a AVRI Tort guard - will try that when I'm at home
the TVL Oxblood has a purple shade in the sun :
the pickguard on it now is a red WD Tort with a bit of yellow shade
the TVL itself has a red tort PG and it doesn't look too much off as well :
the kind of light (warm sunlight or synthetic light) makes such a difference when it comes to color of the lacque ...

I bet spitfire could pull off a tort that is close to oxblood.

I sprayed the headstock of my black Precision Bass white today. Will post result here when finished.

Like Gutterrock said, it worked pretty well on the Sonic Youth signature series.
I'm thinking of buying a refin'd vintage body and would be worried about matching the finish on the headstock of a new neck, so I'll probably do black and a black pickguard.

I'm surprised you don't see more black headstocks on sunburst guitars.

Re: Anyone ever deliberately mismatch headstock and body col
I like matching head stocks.. I absolutely love mismatched head stocks. Though, I love it because it would have happened out of necessity, vs aesthetics.
I love the idea that someone played, or gigged their guitar so hard that the neck needed replacing.. The only available replacement, because they couldn't afford to get a match, was to use whatever was laying around in a box.
I don't necessarily like the idea of purposely matching a mismatched headstock with a pick guard, or specifically refinishing a mismatch.
