Sorry, gaffa tape makes a guitar look like shit. If you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a guitar, but are too cheap to buy a proper strap, that's not punk, cool, hardcore, or any of the above. That's poser bullshit.Junkyard God wrote: gaffer is HXC i dont think its over done.

Re: Strap Locks VS Washers. Discuss......
My Oly White JM came with those Gold shaller strap locks when I traded it for my Jag. I thought about replacing them imidiatly, but for some reason I didn't. I'm a tall guy and when I drop a guitar I goes a long way....So, they stayed. I had ripping straps once, Bass fell on the floor, messy...ruptured fretboord (It actually came lose till after the first fret), broken tuner, etc...wasn't even mine to begin with ...so, I'm not that against strap locks. Would't go out and buy them.
Gaffa tape does not come near my guitars. (It's an ugly mess...the "glue" of tape eats your finish if it stays long enough on the guitar, it also stains your guitar. It's a mess...period)

I agree. I used to think straplocks were too gaudy and I didn't like the way they wobbled in the seat a bit. But I got so sick of the close-call BS that I just went ahead and tried 'em. Now all my guitars have 'em. I have a single strap that I prefer, so it works out better anyway. I even force them on my friends who are constantly dropping their axes, but don't have the reflexes to have near-misses.
Though I don't share Rumors' fervor, I loathe the tape solution as well. I am far too meticulous(read:anal) for such. I just prefer a stable solution to a jimmy-rigged one.
There wasn't one punk-rock word in that comment, so I guess you'd be spot-on in saying I'm not hardcore enough fer tape.
I don't mind the washer method, but as I said, I like my strap.

Re: Strap Locks VS Washers. Discuss......
i would never gig with a regular strap. i used to, but too many times have i had to stop playing mid-song to reattach the strap, or pick up the guitar off the floor. i've had some bad experiences with strap locks too, so for about 8 years now, i've been using these:
they haven't failed me yet.

Mmmmm. The best solution so far. Simple & effective.painted wood wrote: These are what you need. I have them on all my guitars. They are the best.

I have the washers already. Plus I've got a hack-saw & some files.

Re: Strap Locks VS Washers. Discuss......
I'm always prepared to catch it when I drop it so I don't use strap locks of any kind. My left hand never leaves the neck. It has worked since '85*. I've had straps come off, buttons come out, etc. but haven't let a guitar touch a floor yet.

+1...I blame crappy straps on failure.mynameisjonas wrote: i would never gig with a regular strap.
I'm suprised nobody has mentioned that they play so incredibly hard that they must use straplocks or duct tape. Since I only play slightly harder than say Pete Townsend or JImi Hendrix I don't need them. (I only do partial windmills and maybe 1 somersault onstage)

I don't like strap-locks myself. The schallers rattle and the dunlops are hard to get on straps. I like the way the original buttons look. Leo got it right the first time. I recently got a hold of these http://elderly.com/accessories/items/SL1S.htm, never thought about it again. Believe me, they work great! I got the idea from looking at Nels Cline's amazing 59' Jazzmaster.

I don't mind the tape solution, just so long as it's done tastefully and not on a brand new guitar and for the obvious reasons of being hardcore.
This guy does it but I'm pretty sure he needs it, and he also uses those DiMarzio straps (he hits very hard):
Any excuse for some guitar porn...

I use those on all my guitars
in fact i have only one strap, made off a seatbelt, and all my guitars have schaller strap buttons
when I change, I keep the strap on.

I'm in complete agreement with Rumors on this issue. Gaffa/duct tape = tosser.
I like Grover straplocks, they're a much better solution than those big contraptions. They screw into the end of the button, so they're not visually intrusive and strap stays in the correct position, not an inch away from the guitar body.
I have a couple of sets of the star shaped ones. I'd prefer disks or something plainer, but the stars are pretty nice, and I'm happy with them.

I wouldn't gig without some sort of straplock. I use the Dunlops. They are on all my electric guitars except for my 1965 Jaguar. I just refinished it and I went with the original buttons.
