Tinted clearcoat, as said above.  Works every time.

There was a great shot of that guitar in there, and seeing that was probably the defining moment that made me lust over a Sonic Blue/Matching headstock Jazzmaster as my dream guitar.  Hopefully mine takes on that greenish hue years from now!
...the second guitar mentioned was listed as Ice Blue Metallic when it was up for sale - I pulled the pictures onto my computer back then.
