AVRI setup specs?

Post by MirageIndigo » Wed Sep 15, 2021 9:05 am

What action heights are people aiming for with their AVRIs? I have a 58/62 hybrid with the 7.5" radius, r/w board and a mastery bridge.

At the moment I have a .75deg shim and I tried to match the Mastery radius to the 7.5". My non-wound G sticks out like sore thumb and I'm getting fretout on bent notes on the high E above fret 14. This is somewhat to be expected, but I'm curious what action people are running, particularly on the treble side.

I will likely need to dress in a slight fall off on the treble side, but I'm curious what action I should be aiming for.

Action is a matter of personal preference. I like 1/16" at the 12th fret,on all strings. I don't have a problem with 1 step bends in the upper frets with 7 1/4" radius, as long as the frets are level and there is some fall-away.

I recommend getting the Sketchy Setups: Fender Offsets book. It covers all the stereo elements you need:

But to answer your question, I put a capo in the first fret and measure at the 17th fret. I have:

Low E: 5/64
High E: 4/64

This is a pretty standard setup. If you play hard, go for 6/64 and 5/64. If you play light try 4/64 and 3/64. Action is personal, and depends on the neck’s frets. If you cannot play well at 5 and 4 64th, get a fret dress.

If you’re fretting out on a bend: get a fret dress.
