Seymour Duncan SJM-1 Vintage Jazzmaster ?

Post by Bronco Billy » Sun Jun 04, 2023 10:50 pm

Hey Guys.

I'm looking around to try some new pickups to try in my '59 Partscaster, that has been my main guitar the last 8-10 years.

When I built it, I put in SD Antiquity 1. As I remember it, at that time, you could get Ant1 and Ant2 ,didn't realize SD made a "vintage jazzmaster" pickup.

I have been around Ant2 and Lollars in other jazzmasters, and moved on. The ant2 was kinda too bright, and the Lollars seemed a bit too modern for me.

Why don't people talk about the SD SJM-1 Vintage jazzmaster set?

I'm feeling my JM is a bit too midrangey at times. It's my favorite guitar to play, but I don't quite feel like the pickups are matching the guitar. I've been around swapping pots, been at every combination, 1meg, 500k 250k and a mix of all.

Just put these in a 40th Anv Sq JM. I live them a lot better than the factory PuPs. Less shrill, tighter low end on the neck. IMHO

I’ve had these in my MIJ JM for about 25 years. I’ve messed with pot values just to see what I liked and gone back to 1Meg. I’ve never felt the need to change the pickups out.

I bought my first Jazzmaster, MIJ , about 11 years ago, it arrived with a set of SD Vintage for Jazzmaster pick ups, had them wired in by a veteran guitar tech, no other mods, left the stock wiring pots etc in it, just a Mustang bridge other than the pick ups, I love them! The tech bloke I refer to said the sound was the closest he's heard to an original 59 set. I describe them as the "languid sound", real warmth to them. I believe the reason you don't hear about these too much is that the more commonly referred to Antiquity 1/Antiquity 2 items had a catchier name. Had had a listen or two to Antiquities and I much prefer the Vintage for Jazzmaster that I have, I hear them (antiquities) as a little thinner than the Vintage pair.

Great pickups! I agree with eternal learner’s comments.

If you can’t wrangle an excellent sound out of them the equipment isn’t to blame.
