No, it's a compensated nut to help with tuning.

The Earvana nut that I linked to is a cheap ($30 or so) compensated nut which aims to improve tuning in the same direction.

If it'll intonate, great...if not, I just get it as close as humanly possible and fugidaboudit.

I may need to do this to the VI soon. Since Ultracrush play a lot of big chords all over the neck and sing with harmonies intonation becomes a serious issue.

I may just buy 2 tusk nuts and use one to make "shims".

My question is does this mess up upper position intonation?

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I don't think it should effect upper position intonation. The compensated nuts take into account that it's harder to press down a string closer to the nut, which is what throws off the calculations used to figure fret placement and all that. Thus, if you're way up on the neck, that extra tension isn't an issue. I guess it must balance itself out as you move further from the nut? I dunno - I'm intrigued by this stuff but my brain stops working when they get into the math of it.

donnyII, how do you go about it when you tune the guitar? i heard you can´t use a regular pedal tuner..

i used to have lot´s of intonation problems on one of my guitars, especially with the relation betwen the G and B strings, but then i lowered the nut as much as i could without getting string buzz, and now it intonates very well.
