I also never used a Buzz Stop and I never will. Sometimes I strum the strings behind the bridge, which produces a special sound. The buzz stop would only disturb it. In addition to that, the buzz stop makes the Jazzmaster or Jaguar non-classical.

I have had them fitted to my Jazzmasters periodically and seem to flip-flop as to whether I fit them or not, they seem to work on some and not on others. They can strangle some guitars and mute the subtle differences between them, other guitars can be saved by them. For instance, my 65 OW Jaguar has one fitted, it plays and sounds crap without it, my 60 Blonde Jazzmaster doesn't have one and doesn't need one.

To say that they kill EVERY Jazzmaster / Jaguar outright is silly, silly, just damn silly.

Silly.

Agreed-my 65 JM was crap w/o it.  When I changed strings, I added the Buzz Stop and it's renewed my insanity for Jazzmasters.  It makes a huge difference in mine.

i think it does exactly what it's suppose to do, and that's to stop the strings from jumping the saddle grooves so easily and to help with the bridge buzzing. IMO, the created "sustain" might not necessarily be what a lot of people want to hear coming from their offset. i have one on my JM and it does do wonders for the string problem. and maybe it's just me, but it seems to make the guitar feel different in general. maybe harder to bend notes??? but like i said, it does help the string problem, and i can bash away on those power chords and the low E remains entact. i have noticed though that it doesn't completely eliminate all rattle and buzz. i still have to adjust the bridge every now and then in order to cease the unwanted noise.

I've tried them but taken them off...............i like plucking the string behind the bridge too much and the buzzstop gets in the way.

I use 13's on all my guitars so i don't have much problem with buzzing anyway and i don't really like the look of buzzstops :-X

I'm also one of these guys that goes either way ( as far as buzzstops, that is  :P).  I will say that I haven't noticed THAT much of an improvement in sustain with it on.  I will also say that when I'm playing with headphones I can hear the strings vibrating behind the bridge, almost like a harp reverberating, when it's not on.  I haven't decided yet if that bothers me.  Also, the look of it really doesn't bother me.  I don't know if it was on this forum or one of the others (I was on jag-stang for a while before coming over here) but someone said "more chrome = good!"

I use the strings behind the bridge all the time too, I don't see the point in adding something to get rid of buzz if it's going to limit the guitars potential. There's other/better ways to get rid of buzz or the droning of the strings in the bridge tail gap if that's an issue.

How exactly do you "use" the strings behind the bridge?  I'm asking out of total ignorance...

Strum them, pluck them, bend them with your fingers or palm... I usually turn my big muff on and hit the lower strings behind the bridge, if you use your left hand and move around on frets in the right key that your playing you can get some really cool sounding droning notes.

Hmmm...  I'll have to experiment when I get home.  I don't have a big muff, though.  I like to keep it trimmed.

I usually turn on the phase, chorus, blue box, distortion and whatever else  then get a certain pattern of picking behind the bridge and i get this synth type harmonic sound that i manipulate with notes and harmonics on the fret board.I use it during interludes and solos, alot of my music is experimental instrumental.

I just put one on my '59. I hate the look but it sure does seem to enhance performance. Plus you can really whack it and the strings stay right where they belong. Butt ugly but functional.
