Staytrem vs. Mastery or Mastery vs. Staytrem

Oh, just an update. I tried the staytrem out in a half-finished Jazzmaster build with a trem system and it works very nicely there. Still not sure if i will keep it over a mastery. I'll have to wait until I can plug it in. But I think mastery gets the edge in replacing a bridge on a non-trem guitar to get better height adjustments.

staytrem would be perfect were it not for one minor flaw - certain strings touching the lip of the bridge as they break down to the trem. you can remedy this by slightly tilting the bridge backwards until they break clear. still an amazing bit of hardware, love the hex adjustable intonation screws

I leave the staytrem pushed fully back towards the back all the time. Seems not to effect the trem operation, and gives a useful 'reference point' to put the bridge in for tuning / intonation. And like you say it ensures the strings clear that rear lip on the bridge

have you noticed any negative effects of not having the bridge float in the middle?

None at all. Tuning after using the trem has stayed rock solid. When I had the bridge in the middle tuning would sometimes go a bit flat/sharp after using the trem, but this way I've had no probs at all.

FWIW I use the trem just for subtle vibrato, accents and don't do huge pulls / dives on it. Not sure if this 'half-floating' method would work if you're doing big up bends on the trem, but for my use it's been really solid. I also add a smear of vaseline on teh saddles when doing a string change & think this helps keep everything in tune.

I did. Mustang to Staytrem, Mustang bridge had some buzzing on the low E and I wanted the tighter string spacing...unfortunately my Staytrem introduced way more buzz, I'm kind of unhappy with the exorbitant price.

I can't see the right hand side of the bridge cos the images are too large for my browser, but are you saying the buzzing is because the rear of the string is touching the rear lip of the bridge?

Can't you tilt the bridge towards the trem more?

Nope, no shim. I contacted Staytrem and they said the bridge was pretty low, so I raised it by about a millimeter. It still buzzes, but it's been reduced. Maybe I need to take it somewhere else for a set up.

Maybe so. My staytrem is a lot lower than yours was, no buzzing. The neck is shimmed, though.

just put the freshly arrived staytrem on "teh crackwhore". don't notice any magic so far.

she did pop the 1st string, though.
might as well replace them all now, cuz they're OLD!!!

Honestly, I feel like there is no magic to the Staytrem bridge, and that's IS the magic. It doesn't change the sound of playability of the guitar, just makes a more solid bridge than a regular Jazzmaster/Jaguar or Mustang bridge. Mine also buzzes in the same manner, but I don't really let that bother me. I just tilt the bridge back towards the trem and it stops buzzing.

nah i'm not complaining, i just thought it'd make the guitar "so much more alive" and so on. tone fer dayz etc.
i had an old mustang bridge on it before and i never had probs with it. i'll just put it on another guitar now.

i just realized the fretboard is über-grimey too. will clean it all off and see what happens.

I have a staytrem on my 62 and think it's impressive... That said, curiosity got the better of me and I've just ordered a Mastery. I need to know!! Will sell whichever I like less!
