well, what's done is done...maybe you could try and restore her back to her old glory?Regan wrote: Well, it had to be rifinned. I routed for a humbucker ....among other things. This was back in the mid-80s. I don't know what I was thinking???? It was back in my metal daze.....er...days. I was thinking about value or anything, I just wanted it to sound like I wanted it to sound. Oh well, it makes me sick now....it really does. :-X
What I'd give to have her back the way she was. It was my first electric.....really my first guitar, and it means a lot to me. I'll most likely ever sell it anyway, but still, a guitar's value is always relevant. Twenty yrears from now I may be saying, "If I hadn't been so stupid and done this to this guitar it would be worth $40,000 now!"

Re: Get out yer sunbursts....
I wish I could go back as close as possible to how she was. However, it looks like sunburst is out because of where some of the wood filler will be. It will show through some of the translucent yellow and red. I haven't totally ruled out sunburst, but I'm about 75% sure it won't work. I want sunburst so bad.....I am even going to use yellow dye on the body first, and see how it looks before I decide for sure. I also have some graining pens, and I have thought about trying to find wood with glue it in the chopped areas, matching the grain as closely as possible.
After all is said and done though, it will most likely end up being Olympic White.

Thanks. The tort guard helped me decide on white. I hope she'll look good. It will be different.
If I have to go with white, I am still having trouble deciding whether I should use tinted nitro or not.

Re: Get out yer sunbursts....
if you want to get that vintage look, you should just go with the normal clear nitro and let it yellow with age...I hear it actualy starts yellowing pretty fast

Yeah, I may do that. I have a 1980 Strat that was white.....it's now very yellow. It didn't take it very ong at all to start changing.

There were a lot of hasty refins in the 70s and 80s! It happens. At least you've held on to your baby!

Yeah, it was an all original '65 Jag that I bought in '78. I started butchering it in the mid 80s. I stripped it in the mid 90s. Hopefully I'll get it refinished before this decade ends!!!!
I'm glad I still have it, but it hurts to see it in pieces. I've have had it stripped and cased for years. It's time to do something with it. I guess I could call it the guitar project of the decades!

Do you have any bad tattoos? It's all a part of the tapestry, man. Love it for what it is--your history. There's only one like it. Forget cash value. I did the same thing to a Musicmaster when I was 14 but I kept some of the parts (sum?) and now I pieced it back together. I have a few scars myself, so I can look beyond it. Meanwhile you have a 65 Jag! I only wish I had bought one in the 80s.
I am about to paint a 3TSB on a Mosrite and it doesn't matter to me that it's a refin. Doesn't. Matter. I have it!

Seems like my life is a like bad tattoo sometimes! No, seriously, I know you are right. I am pesamistic by nature, and I do need to look at things differently sometimes. Thanks for that great bit of wisdom! It is very encouraging to me.Hellion wrote: Do you have any bad tattoos? It's all a part of the tapestry, man. Love it for what it is--your history. You know, I don't think we know of anyone else here who has really done a lot of routing and stripping of original guitars. Whenever we see these guitars on ebay and whatnot, we always go "what were they thinking?" but now we know that these people are just humans (or were humans, judging by your zombified avatar).

There are a few around here who have performed those kind of "mods." They don't speak of it much, for fear of the extreme flaming.StevenO wrote: You know, I don't think we know of anyone else here who has really done a lot of routing and stripping of original guitars. Don't sweat it, Regan! It happened, there's nothing you can do about it. The guitar can be refinished, you can fill the big routes. You didn't sell it, that's what counts!
40 years from now, people are going to be cursing a lot of the folks on this board for the mods they are doing to today's guitars!
