Proper height from Jazzmaster body to fret board?

Post by hamletpowpowpow » Sat Aug 01, 2020 11:48 pm

Howdy!

I'm building up a Jazzmaster. I have an AVRI spec body from Guitar Mill, and unfortunately, the neck pocket is too shallow for the neck that I have.

I'm having a luthier route the pocket for me, and I'm sure he knows what he's doing - but for my own edification, what's the suggested height of the fretboard to the body when used with a mastery?

Thanks!

I think the neck pocket should be 5/8'' deep. That's where I'd start.

How shallow is it? I know some people say vintage offsets have shallow pockets from the factory, but I’ll believe it when I see it myself.

You actually would be fine if the overall geometry works out. Elevating the neck will help with the bridge break angle.

This has been exactly my experience. I've had a couple bodies with shallow neck pockets, and all they did was eliminate the need for a shim. The bridge ended up a height equivalent to maybe a 1 degree shim on an average body with non angled pocket, so the break angle was lovely and the pickups could still use standard screws with just a little more foam than average packed under there.

I'd do a dry run of assembling the neck/body/bridge/vibrato and see how it looks.
