Did I do something wrong?

Post by billboneys » Mon Aug 03, 2020 4:32 pm

I have an AVRI 62 Jazzmaster with SD Antiquity II's in it. I just replaced the bridge pickup with a Novak P90 Jazzmaster pickup. The Anitquity had a black wire and a white wire. The Novak had a green wire and a yellow wire. I oriented the pickups the same way and then wired up the Novak using that as my guide. After stringing back up the Novak sounds great and the Neck sounds great but the middle position sounds thin and quieter. It almost sounds out of phase like a Jag or Mustang when switching the phase switch. Is it possible the Novak wiring needs to be switched or is this something to be expected when mixing these two pickups. Thanks for any help.

Yep, they'll be out of phase. Seymour Duncan go the opposite to how Fender and Curtis Novak wind theirs.

Swap the hot/ground connections from one of the pickups at the switch (either of them, it doesn't matter) and you should be good to go in the middle position.

Andy's got you sorted. Unfortunately there's no standard for which direction to wind pickups and some manufacturers do it the opposite of others. Should be an easy fix though.

That's great news thank you for the info.

Your problem should be solved exactly as stated. The other consideration when mixing pickups from different sources is whether they will be hum-cancelling (RWRP) when combined in the middle position (a not-inconsiderable concern for jazzmasters). That firstly requires that the two pickups have opposite magnetic polarities (eg neck north, bridge south). Then you just wire them whichever way sounds in-phase (can also be measured if you're keen to know before soldering).

This solved the issue. Thanks for the advice. This thing kills with the P90 and a Rat. Thanks!
